Steve Nash MVP

As much as I am proud of Canadian Steve Nash being named MVP, there is a bit of controversy going on about it. Some commentators have questioned why Shaq didn't win. One Miami newspaper columnist even hinted there were racial overtones to the decision.

It does seem odd that Shaq has only won it once, when he is so dominant every year. Thoughts?

Shaq probably deserved it but I don't think there was anything racial about the decision. I know I'm speaking from half a world away, and it's hard to fully understand things from afar, but it seems unfathomable to me that basketball could have any problems with racism in America, certainly such to impact on the integrity of decision making by the journalists who receive mvp ballots; when it seems so multicultural in comparision to the other American sports. Surely, if anything got Nash the award, it was sentimentality, being that his feats at Phoenix have been such a fairytale. Agree that Shaq is unlucky to have just one mvp to his name, I can think of several other seasons where I thought he was ripped off.

i can and cannot understand the racism aspect.
Past MVP winners...Duncan, Jordan, Barkley, Magic, and Malone. All are Black and all great players and all deserving of the MVP.
However, there are alot of black players playing and this could be a case of "hey there are also great white guys playing too". I hope thats not the case.
Nash was deserving of it. The suns won 29 games last yr and 62 this yr. Thats a massive improvement. Having said that, he has alot of good players. Stoudemire, Marion, Johnson, and Richardson. Where as the Heat only have Wade and a case of old role players who were good once upon a time.
Arguments can be made for both players winning, but i am not fussed that Nash won...good luck to him.

I think Nash got a bit more notice, because his team lost like 5 or 6 games in a row when he got injured earlier in the season. People probably saw this as his team being nowhere near as good without him, which I don't think was entirely the case.

Both Shaq and Nash are worthy winners of the MVP, but if you asked every GM who would be the first player they'd pick if they were starting a team, most would take Shaq.

Did a certain white fella from the Boston Celtics in the mid to late 80's win the MVP?

Larry Bird.

Larry Legend did win the MVP multiple times, but i was just stating some of the african american players to have won the MVP....thus there is no racism attributed to voting.
Its like Anthony Mundine when he said racisim had soemthing to do with him not playing for australia. Tallis is part aboriginal, and Wendall is torres straite islander (i think) at the time Mundine was having his say.

I do think he is the worst player to ever win the MVP, but I also think he deserves it. The Heat were a 46 win side last season, they had nowhere near the improvement of the Suns. On the other hand, the Suns greatly underachieved last season. I would of given it to Shaq, but Nash is still deserving.
