After watching Steve Witt play for Newcastle on Friday night I can't understand why many people were sad to see him go. Newcastle had many injury problems and Witt did nothing for 75 minutes of the game. No wonder smithy didn't think he was good enough.

what about when the scores were level towards the end of normal time, and 1, he dropped it when brought down just short of the line and then 2, he threw that forward pass from dummy half!

See, that's just it.

Smithy told him he was not good enough YET to play Firsts for us.

I think he was right.

Steve has yet to hit his straps at Newcastle. He is new to first grade though and of course he isn't going to be playing great footy so early on. Michael Hagan gave Witt a chance though, something Smith never did, which is the most dissapointing thing about the situation. He's a good player and has the potential to be something great.

Eels Dude - Steve is not going to be something special. Look at the other inexperienced players for the Knights - George Clemont - played great, Craig Hall - played great. Out of all the inexperienced witt was terrible. He never took the line on and honestly it didn't seem he was on the field. I am sure Kurt Gidley would have liked a 5/8 contributing.

I think Hagan isn't expecting much from Witt at the moment, the impression I get is that he just wants Witt to settle into first grade, help Gidley a bit and deliver more ball to the outside backs. I think Witt hasn't been great for Newcastle yet, but as he settles in first grade and becomes more familiar with the rest of the team we'll see a lot of improvement from him.
