1. MEDIA RELEASE: 12 July 2004

AUSSIE LEGENDS COME TOGETHER TO HELP `STOP THE ROT' AT LEICHHARDT

A team of past and present sporting legends and celebrities have
joined forces with the Leichhardt community to back the `stop the
rot' campaign to rebuild Leichhardt Oval.

The oval's grandstands, which were built in 1913, have been severely attacked by white ants and are no longer considered safe. A
decision to demolish the grandstands was taken by Leichhardt Council
back in April and campaigners are now calling on the State Government
to step in and help the redevelopment of the ground to ensure that
the future of rugby league at this historic site is not jeopardised.

`Leichhardt Oval is the heartland of rugby league' said Tigers
Chairman, David Trodden

`This oval represents almost 100 years of heritage and history – investment is needed to make sure that the grandstands are rebuilt
and that other improvements, such as improvements to the toilet
facilities, disabled access and lighting can also take place.'

Millions of dollars are needed to redevelop the Oval, the majority of
which needs to come from State Government funding claims Leichhardt
Mayor, Cr Alice Murphy.

`Neither Council nor the Tigers can afford to fully fund the
redevelopment of the ground. The State Government must step in make
sure that this historic facility isn't lost for future generations of
Leichhardt residents and Tigers fans.'

Sporting legends and celebrities will come together on Thursday 15th
July, to draw attention to the plight of the Oval.

Dawn Fraser (Australian Legend), Paul Sironen (Balmain Great), Wayne
Pearce (Balmain Great), Gary Freeman (Balmain Great), Keith Barnes
(Balmain Great), Anthony Field (The Blue Wiggle), Alice Murphy
(Leichhardt Mayor), Mark O'Neill (Current Wests Tigers and Balmain
Champion), Darren Senter (Current Wests Tigers Captain), David
Trodden (Balmain Football Club Chairman) and Members of The Stop Rot
will all be present.

Tigers legend, Paul Sironen, said

`My favourite memories of my playing days include running out onto Leichhardt Oval to a packed hill with the Tigers chant echoing
around the ground. The atmosphere generated at grounds like
Leichhardt Oval can never be replaced; I hope that opportunity is
still available to our next generation of Tigers'

All news and sports media outlets are invited to join the team at
Leichhardt Oval on Thursday 15th July at 10am. More details follow
at the end of this release.

Stop The Rot Media Day a huge success: 15 July 2004

Today, the Stop the Rot Team was joined by prominent Tiger fans
united in their resolve to Stop the Rot and Save Leichhardt Oval.

The STR team would like to extend a huge thanks to Darren Senter,
Mark O'Neill, Wayne Pearce, Keith Barnes, Paul Sironen, Anthony
Field, Roy Slaven, Gary Freeman and Alice Murphy for their time and effort today.
We also received apologies from Ben Elias and Dawn Fraser who were
unable to attend.

Rob Rosenberg was in charge of the day and did a fantastic job along
with the help of Julie Burt and David Trodden. Great teamwork by all
involved.

This email is also to alert you to the fact that the Footy Show will
be running a story on the campaign tonight. Also keep an eye and ear
on the news on both television and radio networks this evening and
of course the papers in the coming days.

www.NRL.com has already posted an article on the campaign which is
great news.

Keith Barnes has also been very busy with radio interviews and we
thank him for that. He will be on 1269am very shortly so tune in if
you can.

Unfortunately, www.stoptherot.org has chosen the worst possible time
to crash on us. We are working on getting it back up but please keep
an eye on it in the next day or so for a heap of photos and news.

Thanks again to all involved and we look forward to seeing everyone
again on Saturday night!

Regards,

The Stop the Rot Team,

Oh ok. NRL site's report said HG. And i'll be watching for sure.

yeah they stuffed up. He signed a few souvenier jerseys as Roy Slaven rather than his real name..

If anyone wants to help on Saturday they will go into the draw for one of those signed Balmain jerseys (signed by the celebs that attended today) and EVERYONE who helps will get a free Limited Edition (only 20 made) super special Stop the Rot T-Shirt. Email info@stoptherot.org if interested or just come and see us outside the hill entrance from 5.30pm.

How excruciatingly abysmal is the Footy Show? :-& :-& :-&

Bastards kept the story till the very end....oh well the main thing is the exposure.

Tell ya's a funny story......me and cullus was in the old dressing sheds when who should walk in but none other than Keith Barnes.
Talk about being in some sort of trippy time warp

Fox Sports did a story yesterday at 5pm in pre game show. I didn't see it or have it taped but we are working on getting a copy. RifRaf saw it but the rest of us didn't.

I think last night against the Storm despite a paltry crowd still showed what an effect this ground has on opposition sides.
