Storm sign Hinchcliffe, Tolman

June 17, 2008 MELBOURNE bolstered their depth for the next two seasons by securing Canberra hooker Ryan Hinchcliffe and retaining rising prop

Aidan Tolman until the end of 2010.

Hinchcliffe, 23, agreed to join the Storm and become captain Cameron Smith's understudy, although he is also hopeful of being considered in the back row.

Tolman, 19, has played three NRL games since making his debut in round six and resisted offers from several other clubs to commit his future to the Storm.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said Hinchcliffe had a great opportunity to push for a spot in Melbourne's top side given his forward utility value.

"He's a tough kid who has pretty good skills around the ruck," said Bellamy.

"Cam is obviously our captain and hooker, but there's definitely a spot in the 17 with his ability to fill in at hooker and play in the backrow.

"With Matt Geyer retiring, we see Ryan possibly playing the role Matt has this year, and Nathan Friend and James Aubusson have played for us over the past couple of years."

Bellamy said Tolman was a significant signing for Melbourne's future.

"Aiden has come through our developmental system and has played extremely well this year, forcing his way into NRL calculations most weeks," said Bellamy.

"He's definitely a Melbourne Storm type of player.

"He works hard and does all of the little things that are so important in the way we play here."

Good news for hinchy, considering we have more than enough depth at hooker. Hopefully this paves the way for Lillyman or Moon

Wish him all the best. Lets send him out a premiership winner

Yeah he's pretty damn good actually and I for one am sad to see him go.

We've signed up Flanagan for next year so keeping in mind we've got Withers and Buttriss has been going great guns for us this year...

All the best to him.

Is Hinchcliffe any good...what are his strengths ??.

He's ok
Solid as a rock. Will defend his heart out, gives good quick service and has reasonable vision, however there is no place for him here anymore, with Withers still on the books, Buttriss playing better then him this season and Flannagan signed on for next season and beyond.
Sad to see him go, he's a top bloke and solid player, wont let you down, but is unlikely to star. I wish him all the best

you could be right, either way he wouldnt have become "the man" at our club, due to the fact we dont have "the king" and he'd have spent more time in QLD cup then anywhere else
a good move alround i think

to each his own but i suggest we revisit the missing linQ's form from the last couple of years before we go using unlikely to star (hinchy) and withers in the same sentence???

Didn't the Storm last year sign James Woolford from Canberra?

They did, but he's young. Born in 1990 from memory so probably wont be an potion in FG for at least a year or 2...Dont know how he's been going havent been paying too much attention...

Hinchcliffe is a good player. He wont let anyone down. Plays his heart out, might not have the skills of some other players but Bellamy should get the most out of him. I expect him to be a pretty useful signign for them...
