Strangest festival of 2011?
Soundwave may have pirates on its posters, but for a truly swashbuckling metal adventure look no further than the 70000tons of Metal cruise which is set to sail the Caribbean with a cargo of 2,000 heavy metal fans next January.
Though the festival was first announced late last year, so far only 23 of the festivals 40 acts have been confirmed, with the festivals organisers taking a Soundwave drip-feed approach to announcement, but so far the lineup includes Fear Factory, Amon Amarth, Sonata Arctica, Obituary and the appropriately named Swashbuckle.
All performances will take place on board the ship Majesty of the Seas: a 12 story high, 268 metre long floating luxury resort on a custom-built outdoor stage on the sun-deck surrounded by several pools and plenty of room to sunbathe.
As the festivals website proudly explains Make no mistake, this is not one of the cruises where you share the ship with regular cruise guests This is 100% Heavy Metal! Tons of onboard live shows on several in and outdoor stages, open mic nights, bars that never close, a fun-and-sun-filled day on the beautiful island of Cozumel and an opportunity to mingle side-by-side with the artists in this incredibly fan-friendly scenario that has no comparison. Its like everyone has a backstage pass!... This is more then just a cruise vacation. It is also more then just a Heavy Metal festival. This is 70000tons of METAL. For artists and fans alike, the trip of a lifetime!
The helpful Frequently Asked Questions section of the festivals website suggests that as the weather in the Caribbean this time of year is generally hot anticipate wearing t-shirts and shorts pretty much the entire time.
The cruise sets sail from Miami for the Mexican island of Cozumel on Monday 24th January.
