Pac Islands v Ireland was unreal.

For anyone that wasn't there, Pac islands were winning 42-22 with 15 mins to go.

The Irish then ran in several unanswered tries to take the lead 46-42 with less than 2 mins to go. They seemed to have got out of Gaol on this one, but the Islanders scored a miracle try after the bell to level the scores.

Their Kicker, Sione f**kof**ka (who'd been kicking crap all game), kicked the winning goal after the bell from 15 in from touch.

Marvelous game. Unfortunately the same couldn't be said for the the other 2.

I was talking to some of the Scottish players earlier on, who were drinking XXXX before their game. They didnt seem too interested, but they were ok in patches. The bagpiper was good for the Scots. Aussies ran over them.

I thought Wales v NZ would be a close one, but unfortunately it turned out to be a poor game. Very scrappy, with players looking for a fight at any opportunity. Wales had wicked jerseys though. I wanna get me one.

Was talking to French players Jonathon Laskowski and Cedric Olieu, who seemed very excited to be here.

I also talked to the Australian coach, who rated the French as the toughest challenge, closely followed by the English. The performance by the Kiwis didn't show that they'd be there in the final unless there performance improves

AUSTRALIA OVERPOWER SCOTLAND TO OPEN RUGBY LEAGUE STUDENT WORLD CUP CAMPAIGN

Australia have shown they are keen to win back the Student Rugby League World Cup after a dominating opening display yesterday.

At Griffith University's Nathan Campus in Brisbane, the Australian team went on a rampage against the Scots, running in 12 tries in a 66-4 victory.

The home side totally overpowered the Scots, who took 60 minutes to score their lone try.
"It was a pretty good effort," said coach Steve Calder.
"I was a little disppointed with our ball control, but there were a few areas, like defence off our line, that we worked on and came out well."

Calder said he was happy with the combination of his halves, Chad Buckby and Sam Williams, while centre Jordan Atkins was man of the match with two tries.

Chris Fleming and Nathan Tolley also got doubles, while fullback John Crawley scored three.
The Australians now get set for a titanic clash with defending champions New Zealand, a curtain raiser to the Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday.

"That will be a very tough clash - I think they will be a little more experienced than Scotland," said Calder.

In the opening match yesterday, the Pacific Islands snatched a last-minute 48-46 victory over Ireland.
The Irish came back from 42-22 down to lead 46-42, but on the bell Liu Famaate crashed over, with Sione f**kof**ka slotting the winning conversion from wide out.

In the final round one match, England play France in a curtain raiser to the Broncos-Sharks NRL match at Suncorp today.

The Student World Cup runs for two weeks, with the final to be held at Langlands Park on July 16.

For more information, contact Trad McLean on 0407 432301.

Thanks once again to Trad for passing on these details.

The Pacific Islanders v Ireland game had it all - sparkling attack, some very heavy hitting, an Islanders team seemingly taking control and looking to runaway with the game, the Irish courageously fighting back to take the lead with 5 minutes on the clock only to see the Islanders sneak home with a late try and conversion. A quality game. Haltime score was PI 26- Ire 22.

Oh and of course there was a bit of a stoush, where I thought both teams were pretty even. All was forgotten after the game as opposition players discussed their options for the best place to have a post-game analysis ale.

Game 3 . New Zealand 46 defeated Wales 0.

The New Zealand - Wales match was for me a bit of a ant-climax as I expected the Welsh to be a lot more competitive. Having said that the Kiwis though dominant it all departments grinded their way to a win, rather than be methodical and merciless. A haltime score of 20-0 did not reflect the tightness of the game and the floodgates did not open till the 60th minutes when the Kiwis put back to back tries together. Some late surges by the Welsh failed to turn into points, however it showed their potential and their upcoming game with their Celtic cousins of Scotland could be their finest hour.

All in all a day of quality football entertainment with all teams providing a spirited and physical game for the spectators. The Sin Bin seat was always kept warm for the next occupant ! Look forward to next weekends games, though will be seeing England / France game tomorrow.

Today's game at Lang Park

ENGLAND 35 (M Ainscough 2, M Mullholland, K Till, S Edwards, A Clemie tries; M Ainscough 5 goals) defeated FRANCE 18 (M Chaabi, R Villa, G Tiquet tries; R Villa 2, D Vidal goals) at Suncorp Stadium. Man of the match: England - Martin Ainscough. France - Andrew Bentley. Referee: Chris Sutton (Australia)

Good to see ABC radio was giving updates from this game and spoke to Trad McLean (the media officer for the cup). Warren Ryan made some stupid comments but it's good they gave it a run.

Also I noticed when I got the results sent to me there was a heap of top league journos also on the mailing list including Andy Raymond (Fox), Neil Cadigan, Mike Coleman, Barry Dick, Bernie Pramberg, Steve Ricketts (all News - mostly Courier Mail), Ian Eckersly, David Morrow and Gerard Collins (ABC TV/Radio), Chris Bombolas (Ch 9), Ben Davis (Ch 7), Martyn Saddler (TotalRL), Steve Mascord (SMH) and Wayne Heming (AAP) so plenty of people know about it. Trad and the AURL is doing a good job. Maybe they should be running the World Cup proper.

First he questioned the standard, suggesting it would be very low. Secondly he said he didn't think there were any Unis in the Pacific Islands so was surprised they had a team. Of course the Pacific side are all Australoan based players. It was just ignorance more than anything. Typical of people who know little about rl beyond the NRL. Morrow was more positive. Vossy also mentioned the France v England game during Broncos v Sharks but gave no more details. Anyone in Brissy tell us what the coverage is like up there (Courier Mail etc)?

Wales face an uphill battle to qualify for the Student Rugby League World Cup semi-finals following Australia's 32-14 win over New Zealand at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Australia's win may seem comprehensive but it took them 26 minutes to get any points on the board.

It was the Kiwis who had all the chances in the first 20 minutes but failed to capitalize on them as time after time they were blocked by the resistant Aussie defence. James Koloamantangi came closest to scoring but was held up after crossing the line.

It was Australian winger Jordan Atkins who broke the deadlock scoring after an excellent moving involving Chad Buckby and Clint Lovering.

Following an interception, a 90-metre run from Kevin Stephenson four minutes later made it 10-0 while Atkins ran through for his second in the 35th minute to make it 16-0.

George Taungu got a try back for New Zealand with one second left on the clock before half-time but Australian's Nathan Tilley forced his way over minutes after the break to regain the home side's 16-point advantage.

Stephenson ran 50 metres for his second following a Kiwi knock-on and Chris Fleming extended Australia's lead to 28 after scoring under the sticks with 17 minutes to go.

However the Kiwis got two tries back in the last 13 minutes through Mike Nathan and Paul Aitkens. Aitkens could have had a second but was held up over the line with just seconds remaining.

"The first 20 minutes was what won us the game," said Australian coach Steve Calder. "We didn't make a handling error and our defence was very solid. The only worry was that we started to drop off a few tackles late in the match when we got a bit tired."

Wales face Australia on Sunday knowing that a 56 point win will send the Dragons through to the semi-finals. Anything less and the Welsh will have to rely on Scotland beating New Zealand on the same day.

AUSTRALIA: John Crawley, Nathan Tolley, Jordan Atkins, James Rahme, Kevin Stephenson, Sam Williams, Chad Buckby, George Ghazal, Chris Fleming, Quin Smith, Luke Hilton, Matt McKimmon, Clint Lovering. Subs (all used): Tony Hampson, Shane Wooden, Ben Groves, John Ellis, Ali Kourouche, Mitch Gaal.

Tries: Atkins (26, 70), Stephenson (30, 58), Tolley (48), Fleming (63)
Goals: Lovering 3/5, Crawley 1/1

NEW ZEALAND: Paul Aitkens, Sam Jacobsen, Andreas Bayer, Mike Nathan, Tim Cahill, Mike Craig, Jamie McDonald, Chris Tupou, Jimmy O?Brien, Henry Heke, James Kolomantangi, George Taunga, Andrew Auimatagi. Subs (all used): Daniel McGregor, Tala Paleaasini, Aina Masina, Adam Donaldson, Daniel Bell, Sione Taynyn.

Tries: Taunga (40), Nathan (67), Aitkins (71)
Goals: O'Brien 1/2, Paleaasini 0/1
Referee: Geoff Hilton (England)
Half-time: 16-4
Men of the match: Australia: Tony Hampson.
New Zealand: Paul Aitkens
Gamestar: Tony Hampson for a first class all round performance in attack and defence.
Gamebreaker: Australia's excellent defensive performance in the first 20 minutes gave them confidence and demoralised the Kiwis who never marshalled a serious attack for an hour afterwards.

Making my way to the Student game that day, I passed Vossy and Gus Gould (who seem to be surrounded by a possy of bodyguards !!!). Took the opportunity to get Gus's attention yelling out for him to give the Student World Cup a mention. His reply " The What" " What's that" ' " Yeah sure mate". Didn't get to see a replay of the game but was hoping some mention may have been made. Sounds like it got a quick mention.
