Super 8s?

There was an article in the telegraph today (a long one which is why I haven't typed it out) which said that as early as the conclusion of next years S14 season, a new 'Super 8' competition could be started, which would contain the 4 Aussie S14 sides, plus Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Japan. It would appear that this has taken the lead over any national club competition.

If this is the case, I think it's a poor idea. A national club competition would take Union to Melbourne, Adelaide, and other centres that have no real Union presence. This does nothing for those areas.

They want to exclude the top 30 S12 players(wallaby selected) and play upto 7 games a month, and expect to attract crowds !!!!!!.A national club comp is cheaper.Let the IRB assist the Islands, that is supposed to be their job.

Maybe someone at the ARU (or whoever else is coming up with these silly ideas) should invest in a thesaurus. They could call this comp the:

Splendid 8s
Fabulous 8s
Superb 8s
Very Good 8s.

I think we have enough 'supers' for now.

It would only work IMO if existing teams / clubs were involved. Example: The ACT currently has the Brumbies in Super 14's, and Canberra Vikings in the Sydney club comp. They would need have either of these teams in the Super 8's, not create a new team. To introduce a third team into such a small market would be madness. Same goes for Qld, and to some extent NSW and the Sydney club comp.

This idea stinks look I'm all for helping out the PI nations, but we need our own proper national domestic comp before we start looking to help overseas nations. What do Victoria and South Australia hvae to gain from this? nothing.

Not just Victoria and SA lose out here. Wollongong, Newcastle, Townsville and co. probably would have had representation in an Australian Club Competition.
