Nothing in Rugby League is ever 'here to stay'. ;)

But it looks like they'll stick with it again at least for next season

it'll stay cos the RFL are stubborn bastards.......its a waste of time that only serves to give the clubs 3 or 4 extra home games..sod all to do with competition

they will probably hail it as a massive success.. especially if Leigh or Bradford end up getting promoted

I know we've had the debate on other threads, but I'll say it again, I love the concept!

I didn't realise only the top 4go through to finals. I thought all 8 would.
I'd prefer that the go straight into an 8team finals series straight after they split.

I really like the concept although crowds have decreased after the split which is disappointing.

For the Middle 8s, I think they need to incentivize teams to finish higher so teams can't coast if they know they're going to be in the Bottom 4 of Super League or Top 4 of Championship - eg. Wakefield this year.

While points need to reset, maybe something like this could be implemented:

Super League 9th / Championship 1st - starts with 2 points (4 home games)
Super League 10th / Championship 2nd - starts with 1 points (4 home games)
Super League 11th / Championship 3rd - starts with 1 point (3 home games)
Super League 12th / Championship 4th - starts with 0 points (3 home games)

Yeah lets make it even more complicated..

It should be this..

Super league...regular home & away season, top 6 play offs, the season could start later, march,as well as giving room for mid season internationals..

The bottom ESL team plays the winner of the championship in the "million pound game"

Championship...regular home & away season,top 6 play offs and a league cup,bottom 2 relegated..

League one..regular home & away season, league winner promoted automatically then next 5 play off..

Keep it simple...

Five team playoffs for me 'spud. Six from twelve rewards mediocrity.

Here is my suggestion with promotion relegation

Premier Super League, 12 clubs full salary cap
Super League 2, 8 clubs all pro smaller salary cap
Rugby Chamionship League, 2 pools of 9 (semi pro) the winners of the pools playoff for a grandfinal and promotion too Super League 2

Thats all the current 38 clubs in the UK not inclyding Toulouse

......problem solved

you can if you split the tv money up fairly...
The money is split fairly. Giving an equal share to every club in every division woudl be completely unfair as things stand because Championship matches aren't even broadcast. And even if they were, Super League is the flagship competition and the one that brings in the viewers for Sky and the money into the sport.

The best bet would be to try to negotiate a separate TV deal for the Championships, which could then be split between the clubs. But, as mentioned, that would likely not be anywhere near enough money to run full-time clubs, so it is what it is as far as the central funding that the Championship clubs get. Demands for the RFL to just unconditionally give money to their club seems to be a common thing for Championship fans, I'm not sure why you would expect Super League clubs to just give their money to you.

i never said equal...i said fairly..

i forget the actually figures but the new tv deal could have been broken down as such (roughly)

ESL - £1.6M per season

championship £800k per season

league one - £250k per season

which would have left the RFL £5-6M per season to play with..

I'm not sure why you would expect Super League clubs to just give their money to you.

its not "their" money..its the RFL's...and its their job to make sure the whole sport thrives..not just the job 12...

and in time, with a full time, competitive championship, their tv rights would be worth more....WE HAVE TO STOP THINKING 12-15 MONTHS DOWN THE LINE AND START THINKING 12-15 YEARS...

we've just turned 120 years old...if we wanna see another 120 years we need to start looking after the majority instead of the minority

Championship clubs don't bring in half of the money that ESL clubs do though.

As far as I can tell, there are currently 80 regular season matches televised. 60 of those are the two SL matches a week from rounds 1-23 and the Super 8's and 13 are Catalan Dragons home matches. That leaves the 7 middle 8 matches, all of which feature one Championship team. I think it works out at about 4% of the TV time going to Championship sides, which means that really a "fair" distribution as things stand would be 1% of the money being given to the top 4 Championship clubs and the rest getting nothing.

Of course that isn't realistic and Championship clubs should be given the opportunity to progress and compete if they can, but to be fair the prize money for finishing near the top of the Championship table does reflect that. Equally I don't think that handing them TV money that they haven't earned helps the sport or the clubs themselves.
