Super League Defensive Lines

Hey guys,
I'm watching a replay of the Huddersfield vs Leeds game. I haven't watched much SL (Australian) but noticed that the defensive line spreads out much more than in the NRL, rather than compacting and sliding.

Is there a reason for this? It seems to leave a lot of gaps (might just be this game).

BTW legit question not a dig.

I watch both leagues all the time and can't say I've really noticed, I will look out for it now (about to stream Wigan v Catalans in 10min).

Hey that was a great second half in the Hudds/Leeds match by the way...

Watching it now, don't really have an affiliation with the teams but I was gunning for Huddersfield.

Maybe its down to super league teams being more likely to throw it out wide?

The NRL seems to be an arm wrestle at times, so defences are focused down the middle.

I've commentated on a fair few Bulls games this season and the best I saw them play was a narrow loss to Wigan in the cup... this was after Raynor was sent off though. After this happened the Bulls condensed their defensive line and Wigan couldn't break through. I have said for a while that this tighter line helps out the centre defence (which is the major concern for British RL) as all they have to worry about is the outside. Make teams earn the right to go around you, dont spread the defence and leave massive gaps.

Just watching Wigan vs Catalans now, and Wigan are much more compact around the middle, and they hold down a lot more. They do throw it around a lot in SL, good stuff.

Got to agree, although having gone through the Super League forums over the last couple of hours people seem to be a bit annoyed about the wrestle. I think we were having this discussion 4-5 years ago and now have just got sick of talking about it.

The quality seems to have gone up quite significantly since I watched last.

Still undecided on the play the ball, though it makes the game significantly faster.

Kind of wish I knew the Super League was on in Aus, it's good watching and will definitely tune in next year.

Need a team though, I had a bloke stay with me from France for a few months this year and had never seen league. By the time he left I had turned him into a fanatical Canterbury supporter. He's from Tolouse so if they get in at any point I'll have to return the favour.

I believe Toulouse will get in, they're still 5+ years away from that happening.

Until then, you could follow a team with some former Dogs players, here's a start:

Hull; Mark O'Meley

London Broncos (as they'll be called again next year); Nick Kouparitsas

Salford; Luke Patten, Daniel Holdsworth

...off the top of my head, but there must be a few more...

Probably won't hit up the Broncos, for obvious reasons (I know the connection isn't there anymore but still).

Wigan I like, but can't due to them beating us in the WCC a few years back.

I like Hull, just have to pick a side. Never been but I was gunning for the Hull City Tigers in the English Premier League so hard, ultimate underdogs. I reckon another year and they would have won it.

Hull KR have Green the stand off that i think came from the dogs.
