Personally as a Leeds Rhinos fan over here in the ESL I like the squad number system. It's not too complicated as the numbers run on from each other. the coach assigns them at the start of the season and normally picks 1-17 as his strongest players. This changes over the course of a season though with injurys and loss of form. For example out number 24, Luke Burgess, came into the team after the first few rounds due to an injury to one of the top props. He hasnt missed a game since and if he continues he like he has he could make a shock place in the England world cup squad. For example here is the Leeds squad:

Micheal Jordan is one of the greatest athletes of all time... 23 is his number. if your a REAL sports fan you should know that.

that number is set aside for superstars... it was Shane Warnes ODI number, David Beckhams Real Madrid number, Lebron James's number...

if you wear that number and you dont deserve it than people will call you a nuffie...

Wow... I was more pointing to the fact that RIDGE DIDN'T GET TO CHOOSE HIS OWN NUMBER IN A SYSTEM WHERE YOU GET TO CHOOSE YOUR OWN NUMBER. THEREFORE HE DIDN'T REALLY EXPERIENCE THE SYSTEM HE IS CRITICISING
