super league TV deal

Sky has agreed a record deal that may exceed £90m to maintain its position as the Super League's primary broadcast partner until 2016. The news will be welcomed by the clubs as it represents an increase on the funding they have received under the deal that expires at the end of this season and provides greater financial stability than they have enjoyed in the past.

There is unlikely to be any formal announcement until next month because various other details surrounding the coverage of international matches, the Challenge Cup and the Championship have to be finalised. But the 14 Super League clubs have been briefed about the agreement, which is the second to have been secured since the Rugby Football League appointed IMG Sports Media as agents for television contract negotiations.

The RFL refused to confirm that a deal has been done but a spokesman said: "We are happy with the way negotiations are going with broadcasters and we hope they are drawing towards a conclusion."

The slight increase in funding will come as a relief and possibly even a pleasant surprise to some of the clubs, who had been worried by recent indications of the state of the market, notably the 26% reduction in the value of the latest Football League contract with Sky that was announced in April.

i hope its £90million just for super league.......with challenge cup, championship & internationals deals still to come it should top £100million which is fantastic business in the current climate..

Absolutely fantastic for super league. On top of the 90 million, I hope sky agrees to let the RFL sell at least one SL game to a free to air station (BBC?), because sky only does two games per round.

Congratulations to the RFL for achieving a record deal against the odds, when looking at the Football League recently.

That's like $AU140 mill? Over 4 years?

yep $140m but over 5years

obviously alot less than the projected $1billion you lot might be getting...but it's a completely different market...the NRL is to australian TV what the football premier league is to british tv

Hope you guys can keep it up!

It's a great positive for the RFL and Super League clubs, you would expect the deal to easily get over £100 million once everything else is thrown in.

Considering now only the Challenge Cup Final has to be played on Terrestrial TV and even that can be simulcast, there is the chance a Sky or ESPN might throw some cash in to grab the other rounds.

A regular Test program should also grab a bit of cash, considering how well they rate.

I hope the previous rounds stay on free to air. We can't lose the whole game to sky tv.

The best would be itv4 as they are good at covering sport, they can also have the highlights for me. The Union highlight show is good, on at the same time every week, an hour long and is available nationwide.

aye ITV4 is turning out to be a really good......maybe turning it into ITVSPORT would be the next logical step? it could really become the home for niche sports

they have alot of motorsport & cycling...IPL cricket, abit of darts.....it would be the perfect home for championship RL.....and if premiersports can afford the NRL rights & non-league football rights then i'm sure ITV can

i dunno maybe i should become the head of programming at ITV4 before i become the RLIF boss ;-)

if you compare sky sports with foxtel

foxtel between march & october does'nt really have alot to cover domestically..certainly nothing that requires 7 or 8 outside broadcast teams every week

sky sports has to provide a majority of its equipment to broadcast every premier league game for 9months of the year....so when the RL & football seasons overlap feb-may & aug-oct its not really feasible for every game of both sports to be covered........middle of may thru start of august we have to compete with cricket which also gets alot of coverage on sky so again all game coverage probably is'nt feasible...though at least 3 games a week should be (fri, sat, sun)

all games could be streamed though i recon
