Super slow-mo technology

I know this gets used often in cricket, tennis and many other sports. But I've been wondering, why not have a few fixed cameras, with this slow-mo capability, positioned in the in-goal area?? Most contentious video ref decisions usually involve a blurry ball being grounded. Wouldn't this make a huge difference in judging with a ball was correctly grounded or not?...

Games will take 5 hours to complete if we have to watch super slow-mo and the video refs watch it 6 times each try decision

Video refs are not cost effective. Onfield refs will make incorrect decisions but they take 1 or 2 seconds to make a decision. Video ref decisions can take 100 times longer but the answers are nothing like 100 times better

Limiting video ref decisions would be a positive move rather than giving them more advanced toys

Given Nine are a bunch of cheapskates when it comes to their League broadcast I highly doubt they would fork out the $50,000 to $100,000 per camera to make it cost effective enough to run them all the time.

Why would Channel Nein fork out anything for such technology?

The purchase of these devices to aid referees to make a decision would be the responsibility of the NRL, not Nein's.

the slower the camera the easier it is to overturn non-dubious tries

"Clearly some separation in one of these microsecond frames...No Try!"

Video refs Should only be allowed to watch at regular speed...this slow motion crap shits me to tears.

You might see them permanently installed once all the Sydney clubs have moved into ANZ and Allianz.

It won't take long at all, they don't need to check the whole play at that speed, just groundings. The image is crystal clear!

Slow mo isn't the issue IMO, the video ref and how it is used is more of a pressing issue. Any word on how the captains call in NYC is going?

Not that flash, too many calls are going against the ref

This is being serious . . . why can't the game just be adjudicated at the same speed everyone sees it.

No thanks, league isn't played in slow mo. And refs aren't yet aware of this, which led to the Lafai nonsense on Friday night.

I do remember hearing that the HD cameras cost ~$60k and only FoxTel have 2 of them which is why you occasionally get decent slow-mo replays for VR purposes. It just depends on which corners they put them in.
The fact is there is enough money in league broadcasting for the networks to invest in the technology but their bean-counters couldn't be arsed to do it properly. If the NRL were to insist on it in the next broadcasting deal it would be there and available quick-smart.

You can't compare using the slow-motion in Cricket to league. They have small defined space to target. League has a wide area. Even tennis focuses on the two outside lines.

If blind Freddy can see the correct decision, it has nothing to do with the quality of the images, rather the rattle coming from inside some of these officials heads.

The video referee needs to go back to the simple premise of checking for groundings, touchline and obvious offside (e.g. in front of the kicker). Making them check for obstruction is ridiculous.

Another thing that might help? Don't FORCE the referee to send it upstairs on a verdict. If they have no idea whether it's a try or not, they shouldn't have to T or X before it goes up. It creates an unfair burden IMO.

Soo the AFL (channel 7) can use/afford 1000fps cameras for the little kids at half time, crickets had it for 10 years, and we still get blurry in goal 24fps cameras... FFS
