It's clear he has no faith in Tyrone Roberts, but I can't say I blame him. Roberts will go down alongside Walsh and Dureau as semi-promising local halves who cracked under the pressure of being in the #7 after Andrew Johns.
Perhaps, but Wayne is not reinforcing the system by searching outside of it. How do you break the Johns mentality? You find someone who is good enough to guide the team and stick with them rather than source from outside.
Wayne's simply throwing his hands up and saying 'Can't be done.'
I'm not saying Roberts is the answer; simply saying he isn't the problem and isn't being given a good enough shot at proving that. Organizing a ruck is something you develop, rather than learn. Wayne should persist like he did Lockyer at #6.

Roberts will go down as yet another young half who has been atrociously managed, given very little chance to prove himself and then thrown to the wolves when he doesn't turn up to be the next immortal. I don't understand the criticism of him at all. Sam Williams - there's a promising kid who was given a shot and turned in as much shit as good. Roberts is coming out way in front, quality the vast majority of the time. Unfortunately Knights fans can't seem to see it. Roberts is basically a calmer, nippier Michael Morgan, and I wish Morgan was playing first grade.
Its sad really. Mullen, Walsh, Dureau and Roberts: 1/4 isn't a good ratio if you're a half in Newcastle.
Roberts is really disadvantaged by the fact we need a playmaker and not a dangerous runner of the ball. Mullen is a fantastic field kicker and a great runner, but he's not an organiser. Roberts has a similar skillset but on a lower level.
We need a #7 who is a general rather than a carbon copy of Mullen.
Agree with your assessment but Mullen also has four or five years on him too. Give him time and he'd develop the same skill set.
