For a country with ridiculously long working weeks and working hours, they get by with surprisingly little chemical assistance.

You can buy 'Red Bull' but it's the same syrupy, uncarbonated, and (as far as I can tell) caffeine free shit you can buy in Thailand. Tastes awful and does nothing.

More like, they just wait for you to fall asleep and then they just wheel you out the back door and wheel someone else in to replace you.

Was talking to a guy in my companies Chinese office the other day and I asked him how many days leave he had each year, meaning annual leave. He said "51 or 52". I said, "thats a pretty specific number" and he replied "well, depending on the year, there are 51 or 52 Sundays in it".

I lol'd.

But then I realised that this poor bastard doesn't even get annual leave or even Saturdays off for that matter. I spoke to him further and he told me his wife and kids live about 4 hours from where he works so he spends 8 hours of every Sunday transiting there and back to see them and then he works 12 - 14 hours 6 days per week.

What a life...

Thank God they don't expect the foreigners they bring in to work to that level. I can understand some of the Chinese resentment towards us being here. I don't work weekends, I work no more than 20 hours a week, and I have eight weeks paid vacation off a year.

And I'm earning over five times what the average Chinese workers does without factoring in money I make on the side.

It's not so noticeable in Nanjing. Jiangsu is the richest province in China and Nanjing is its most affluent city. But you go even an hour or so in any direction but east and you'll see people living on less than 10-20rmb a day.

I spent 80rmb on lunch today and I was doing it 'on the cheap'.
