Like f**k Hughes was hard done by. He can't play spin. In the 4 tests in India and the two ashes tests he scored something like 10 runs of 120 balls against spin, or some such ridiculous return. That disqualifies him from being a test batsman.
Because he kept being played out of position. Simple logic suggests than an experienced opener with 21 first class centuries as opener will do a better job from there than elsewhere in the order. If you are weak against spin you have a much easier time playing it after you are set than from the first ball.

Phil Hughes averaging 62 for the tour includes a couple of bumped up scores against second XI county attacks. He's averaged sub-30 at test level since his return to the side. He's unbelievably poor against spin. He's also not great against good quicks. He's not that good, the only reason he's still in the discussion is that the rest arent that good either.

Actual figures: 80 runs and 9 dismissals from 317 balls faced against spin against India and England.

Overall figures since his return against Sri Lanka: 9 tests, 17 innings, 1 not out, 463 runs, high score 87, 4x50, 0x100, average 28.94. He can have absolutely no complaints about being dropped.

He has an overall test average of 32.65. Conclusion: like the rest of our batsmen except Clarke, he's just not that good.

Warner 38.41
Rogers 36.30
Watson 34.51
Cowan 31.28
Smith 29.52
Marsh 27.36
Khawaja 25.13
Maxwell 9.75
Quiney 3.00

It's also irrelevant when Warner and Rogers are better openers (particularly if Warner continues to play as he did yesterday)

Not enough fat blokes in the test team.

Mark Cosgrove had a great shield season last year, make it happen Boof!

When you're a specialist batsman with an average lower than Twatto you know you're in trouble.
