Because he kept being played out of position. Simple logic suggests than an experienced opener with 21 first class centuries as opener will do a better job from there than elsewhere in the order. If you are weak against spin you have a much easier time playing it after you are set than from the first ball.Like f**k Hughes was hard done by. He can't play spin. In the 4 tests in India and the two ashes tests he scored something like 10 runs of 120 balls against spin, or some such ridiculous return. That disqualifies him from being a test batsman.
