Does anybody else feel like the mother of that five year old who drowned shouldn't have taken them to an unpatrolled 'beach' and then left them to their own devices?

Absolutely. And I have to say, the things I see people do at the beach are ridiculous. Maybe it's cos I grew up around the water but I could read a beach at about the age of 8 or 9...it seems to me that no one can even identify a rip anymore

Sadly, a lot of families who immigrate here don't understand a) how important it is for their children to have swimming lessons and b) how cheap and accessible swimming lessons are in this country.

At 5 years old that kid should have been able to tread water long enough for help to arrive, even if he'd only had a few swimming lessons.

Seriously people, it's never too early to teach your kids how to swim.

Agree 100%. My siblings and I were all swimming around the same time we started walking, if not earlier.

We're all very comfortable in the water, and my niece and nephew are similar now. None of us are fantastic athletes in the water, but we all know how to tread water, how to swim most strokes and, perhaps most importantly, what to do if we're stuck in a rip or struggling in the water.

Had the family involved either:
a). Taught their kids how to swim
b). Gone to a patrolled beach
c). Actually watched their kids while they played

An unfortunate death could have been avoided.

The last time I went down the coast there were families pushing their kids straight into a rip zone...thankfully it was low tide so there was no current but I was just shaking my head. They were Aussie families too. And then they argued with the lifeguards!

People don't understand how dangerous the ocean is.

It only means alot to most of them because society categorises them and doesn't allow them to be themselves within the tag.

I read the saddest article the other day about a little boy of 6 who wants to go to school as a girl.
The story went on ,how he loved the colour pink, wanted to play with his sisters dolls and dance like she did.

The parents told him he couldn't do those things because he had a willy(true words in the article) so he decided he wants to be a girl.

If he had been allowed to have a pink room and glitter shoes he might not grow up thinking he needs radical surgery .

I think we should stop trying to put square pegs in round holes and start changing the holes so more can fit in.

I agree with SC on this one. We place expectations on being female and male, without these expectations perhaps less people would resort top such drastic measures.

What if I turned around and said I wanted to be Caucasian, and was going to do surgery to make that happen?
