So... you don't hire them despite being the overall manager.

Or you do hire them (as input is, realisitically, throwing your vote despite it not having weight).

Which is it, Silly Man?

My input 25% (not enough to hire them)
AM: 50%
Supervisor: 25%

If it's locked up at 50% all, it goes to an independent who makes the decision based on the scribes details as well as our input.

i can't help but get the feeling that your role is one of those that would be phased out pretty quickly in any downsizing exercise..?

If the AM wants to have every delegated to him through the Supervisor perhaps (but that won't ever happen :x). I wouldn't say no to a VR right now to be honest.

So... you are basically part of the hiring process. Which means, you are responsible for the hiring of these people you are bagging off.

Good to know where you stand! :thumb

Are you even reading what you type? Yes I am part of the process, but I am not responsible for hiring them, as (a) I don't have the casting vote, and (b) I don't have enough input % to hire them.

In job interviews, I absolutely GRILL the f**k out of any applicant, meaning the one who struggles the least gets my vote. I don't want to know what they can do, because that's what everyone else does, I want to know what will happen when they're under the pump and things aren't going according to plan.

You'll be surprised how good that works instead of the standard "tell me what you can do crap" - unfortunately not everyone sees it that way (referring to the AM).

congrats mate..

do you know what sort of exercise they'll have you doing?
no idea at this point, its just under 4 weeks away. Sounds like group will be given a task of some sort.

I've just been taking each step of this process as it comes nd have done well so far, but this seems like I need a little more prep work involved.

Also not completely sure about my referees. I have a few from Uni who are good because I went well in the subjects and generall engaged with them well, but not sure how well they would know me. My boss from work will give me a great reference but it's not exactly related to my field.

The beep test.
I'd be extremely confident of my chances if that was the case:lol:

ah cool - just remember with any group exercise, what they are looking for is how you interact with the others - eg how you collaborate, negotiate and treat others.. leadership in the group is also an important assessment that they look for, but those other traits can be more important..

it's funny to watch how many people try and 'be the leader' in a group exercise as they think that will give them bonus points, but then end up doing themselves harm as they can end up battling each other trying to be 'the leader' rather than getting to a simple group consensus..

with regards to referees, if it's a new field (sounds like you're just leaving uni?) then the employer should be ready to know that you haven't worked in that field yet..

just make sure you've got people who can vouch for:
- your knowledge / learning of a subject - so that they know you can grasp concepts and learn new things (sounds like you have them)
- your work ethic - so that they know you won't just slack off (if your current boss is happy to give you a reference, that is a good thing..)

lol. BF. You're the king of spin. So you interview them, and are part of the process of hiring them, but have no input to their hiring even though you possess a % of the vote to hire them and end up managing them.

Shane Warne can't spin as well as you do.

I never said I don't have an input, I have 25%, but that's not enough to determine whether or not they get the job.

I'll put it another way for you, all the idiots that have done shit within this organisation this year did not receive my vote.

Thats exactly what i've heard about group exercises. Involving quiet members, performing your role or working within the group is extremely important rather than just trying to boss everyone into your own way.

It'll be interesting. I'm not the best at meeting new people/involving myself right away all the time, so it's a tough little spot I've got to work on. But I know I am a very solid worker and work well within a team so it should in theory play to my strengths.

Interview will be interesting, i've had about three job interviews in my life. All for casual jobs.

don't stress, i'm kind of the same when it comes to these group things.. what i end up doing in most situations is sitting back, absorbing what needs to be done and then jump in where needed and guide the group to the right outcome..

and if there is an observer for the group (there normally is) when making a statement or recommendation, always give the group a short explanation of what the rationale is..

eg. i think we should target competitor "a" because they appear to have the weakest customer loyalty.

as sometimes the answer may not be right (the answer may have been to target competitor "c" for a different reason) but if you explain your recommendation / decision, that can at least show the observer how you think which is a big part of what they are looking for anyway..
