Support grows for Nathan Hindmarsh statue at Parramatta Stadium - crack and all

A NATHAN Hindmarsh statue would not be complete without a little bum crack showing.

This is the overwhelming response from Parramatta greats, officials and fans as the Hindy Farewell Tour officially kicks into gear tonight at the ground where a bronze statue - complete with bronze butt - would be situated, Parramatta Stadium.

The Daily Telegraph understands Stadium Trust officials will consider immortalising the Eels skipper after a campaign by this newspaper saw another club legend, Ray Price, given the same honour in 2009.

"And if Hindy gets a statue, there has to be bum crack," Eels great Brett Kenny laughed.

"You know that appearance Hindy has at the back end of games - exhausted, pants slipping down ... mate, that's him."

Retired Eels skipper Nathan Cayless, a close friend of Hindmarsh, agreed.

"I'm 100 per cent supportive of the statue because when people think Parramatta Eels, they think of Nathan Hindmarsh," he said. "The bloke's been the heart and soul of this club for 15 years."

As for the Hindmarsh bike rack being included ...

"Well, that's the pose isn't it," Cayless said. "His face too with that look of utter exhaustion. A statue could never do it justice but I can't think of anyone more deserving."

Hindmarsh will retire at the end of the season having displayed integrity, invincibility and more crack than a Pakistani pitch on day five.

As a result, several club insiders last night confirmed they would "have a crack at bronzing the crack", while Pricey urged club and Trust officials to "listen to the fans" when considering the issue.

"There have been many great Parramatta players over the year," Price said.

"And Nathan Hindmarsh is certainly among them."

Hindmarsh played his 300th game against Penrith at Penrith's CUA stadium. Parra wore the yellow jerseys that night. Hindy's jersey had a special embroided message about his 300th game.

Great player as he was, unfortunately Ray Price was elevated above some equally worthy Eels greats because of the Stadium Trust brain explosion and then the media frenzy that followed.

Luckily we do have Ken Thornett, Brett Kenny, Peter Sterling and Michael Cronin honoured at the stadium. Bob O'Reilly has a bar as well.

Before we honour Hindy we just need to make sure that the other worthy greats do no slip through the cracks. I'm sure that Hindy would be the first to agree with this.

I agree that Sterlo was part of a great team, however when he was at his peak his had the whole comp in his control. His ability to get repeat sets and control the game was the reason why the rest of his great team had the field position and amount of ball to score points.

I would argue that Sterlo had a far greater influence on the club's success than Hindy. Not disrespecting Hindy for one second BTW.

No matter how much bitching Bert does these days , those of us who were fortunate enough to witness his great career would agree he was an integral cog in the '80s premiaership machine , and the one stable rock that stopped the place from entirely disintegrating in the early '90s.
That said , I would not be averse to a Hindy bumcrack in bronze to adorn the Stadium for all time!

Bit of a silly question, but we have the Grandstands named after Ken Thornett and Mick Cronin.

Now...the Western and Eastern Terraces are yet to be named.

So instead of a Hindmarsh statue, would the Trust consider naming one of these terraces after him ?

Would also allow in the future for another Eels legend ( one that can be held in the same regard as Thornett, Cronin, Kenny, Sterling, Hindmarsh ) to have the other terrace named after him.
