Surely this money would have been better spent on junior development

Yes, they took pay cuts for the last 2 years, and are basically the people who generate the revenue for the whole game. How dare they get money they are entitled to 🙄

Did the players end up taking a pay cut? In 2020 even with the season shortened I know they didn’t miss a cent of their 2020 contracts. I’m unsure about 2021

edit just saw they have taken a 6% paycut for 21/22. I’m certainly not in the ‘they are overpaid’ group, however I do know a stack of club employees lost months of wages and even employment over the past 2 years

How many of those club employees actually did the work though?

I think the players of yesteryear bring the money in. These players are living off that.

They took a pay cut because games were cut the season went from 24 games to 20
But the nrl made a profit of over $60 million so the players believe they're worth a slice bit it's nowhere near the money they did lose

I think in 2020 it was a cut of upwards of 20%

There's a lot of money that could be better spent on junior development.

But the players are the reason fans watch. Young kids grow up idolizing the likes of Cleary, Turbo, Tedesco, Mitchell, Ponga etc.

After a couple of years copping pay cuts there's nothing wrong with them being rewarded with these funds. The split per player is not some massive gain for these guys. They are rewarded handsomely already for the job they do. But the players did make a lot of sacrifice these past 2 years. So IMO it's well deserved.
