Swine flu hits NRL

BY MICHAEL CARAYANNIS

A swine flu threat forced Sutherland Shire first grade referee Jared Maxwell out of this weekend's round of National Rugby League matches.
Maxwell was set to control Friday's clash involving St George Illawarra and Penrith but has been placed in a five-day quarantine after being exposed to the influenza virus on a domestic flight to Canberra last weekend.
Maxwell, fellow referee Bernard Sutton and side-line officials, Jeff Younis and Ricky McFarlane were advised by ACT and NSW Departments of Health officials today that a fellow passenger had tested positive to the virus. Jason Robinson and Steve Lyons will take control of Friday's clash.

Four NRL referees and linesmen quarantined over swine flu

By Steve Gee
May 27, 2009 04:20pm

NRL referees Jared Maxwell and Bernard Sutton have been stood down from Friday night's Dragon-Panthers clash amid fears the pair may have contracted the deadly swine flu.
Maxwell, who was crash tackeld by a Tigers fan at Campbelltown last Friday night, and Sutton are among four NRL match officials who shared a flight from Canberra to Sydney on Sunday, when a passenger was carrying an infected passenger. Maxwell and Sutton were in quarantine at home in Sydney today, along with NRL sideline offials Jeff Younis and Ricky McFarlane, who were also showing wine flu symptoms.
Maxwell and Sutton have both been stood down for Friday night's WIN Stadium clash.
The four will remain housebound for a further five days
NSW Health officials raised the alarm after a passenger displayed signs of swine flu last Sunday.

NRL chief operating officer Graham Anneseley said although the Maxwell and Sutton had trained with other referees on Monday there were no concerns of further contractions.
Annesley said at least one of the officials had a sore throat.
"They have been placed under their own quarrantine for seven days from the date of exposure," Annesely said.
Maxwell and Sutton have been replaced by Jason Robinson and Steve Lyons for the Dragons-Panthers match. The flu scare comes five days after Maxwell was tackled by a spectator following the Wests Tigers-Brisbane match at Campbelltown last Friday.
Anneseley said the loss of two referees was unprecedented.
"All we can do is follow the advice of health authorities. we are no experts in infectious diseases so we are just following teh advice.
"They have assured us there is no need to be concerned about any of the other referees unless any of them start to show symptoms and that's not the case.
"They are not investigationg third party contact, only people who have ghad direct contact with someone who has already been conformed as having the infection."
Anensely said it was not known if the four match officials had been placed on antibiotics or medication.

Swine flu 'no worse than paper cut'

An Australian swine flu sufferer has dismissed fears about the virus, claiming he has suffered "worse paper cuts".
The Canberra man, who spoke to the ABC on the condition of anonymity, said he returned from the US for his young daughter's birthday party on Sunday but checked into the hospital later that day after he started to feel ill.
"Because of all the hype and information they give on the plane and everything that they're talking about, I thought I'd do the right thing and pop down the hospital and let them know," he was quoted as saying.
The man tested positive to the flu despite experiencing no fever or aches and says the diagnosis is mainly an inconvenience, as he can't catch up on work missed while away.
He also regrets that people who attended his daughter's party will now have to be tested.
"That's the worst part of it — there were so many lovely little kids there that now will have to be swabbed and tested," he said.
The 41-year-old suspects he caught the virus from somebody on the plane rather than in US, given the typical 24-48 hour incubation period for swine flu and also because he was only in close proximity to others while commuting.
But despite his protestations that he doesn't feel sick, he says getting his symptoms checked out was the right thing to do.
"I almost felt like I was being a bit over-cautious when I went to the hospital, but obviously I wasn't," he said.
The World Health Organisation claims the number of swine flu cases worldwide has passed 12,500 in 46 countries.
The death toll stands at 91 with most fatalities reported in Mexico, the epicentre of the epidemic.
