SYDNEY's biggest crowd of the season is set to be smashed at the famous Sydney Cricket Ground this Sunday afternoon.

A crowd of about 40,000 is expected to watch old rivals the Roosters and Dragons clash in what shapes as one of the season's finest matches.

The SCG holds 46,000 - with a sell-out still possible with a sunny afternoon and strong "walk-up" crowd.

The largest crowd this season in Sydney was 36,212 in round seven, when these two teams played at the neighbouring SFS. The only problem for SCG officials is the City to Surf - which will be run on Sunday morning and see some road closures through the Eastern Suburbs in place until 2pm.

But Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust chief executive Jamie Barkley was still looking forward to a massive crowd this Sunday at 3pm.

"When the stars align and two great Sydney teams go head-to-head, we are looking at a potential crowd of 40,000," Barkley told The Daily Telegraph.

"The real test for the size of the crowd will be whether the Roosters fans can match the Dragons fans. St George Illawarra fans have a great record of attending matches at the SCG and the SFS.

"There is wonderful history between the two clubs, particularly going back to the 1975 grand final [famously won 38-0 by Easts].

"The match is being played on a Sunday afternoon at the traditional home of rugby league, the SCG. It will be match where a dad takes his kids and dads will take their dads.

"It will one of the games of the season and not to be missed. I reckon we will be watching the potential premiers."

Easts legends will be at the match after attending the club's Hall of Fame announcement on Thursday night.

Some of the greatest and most famous games of rugby league have been played at the SCG.

Def not the Skull. Chances are guys that kids footy passes wont be allowed if they sense a full house. Be sure to get in early. Away supporters bays 11 and surrounds. (Where the old hill used to be)
Warm up bevvys at the Captain Cook anyone? I'd like to start to frame a market as to what time the famous shadow fully covers sideline to sideline. Used to love watching the ABC coverage at the SCG on Saturdays.
3pm kick off. My guess 3.55pm

PS - I brought this up in the Dragon Army forum and would like to share it here. I would love to see whoever is capable, to bring their old school banners AND flags this Sunday. The likes of Choc Full of Magic, Men in Blacklock, Thommo the Tank Engine, etc....And if youre a St George or Illawarra traditionalist, leave the Reebok jerseys at home and (providing they fit and you own one of course) put on the old Penfolds or BHP jerseys for the day. Think back to the images you see in the old school photos and video footage of those Dragons supporters before you giving their guts riding the highs and the lows as any Dragons fan today can relate to. This ones not just about the players on Sunday. Its for those amongst others, in 1949, the 56,000 plus who squeezed in like sardines, sat on the rooftops, WHATEVER IT TOOK, to watch the boys win another premiership. Being on the very ground we last tasted Grand Final success. Those who stood before you, on that very spot, a generation ago, if not more! Look back to where the famous "Hill" used to be. The agony and the ecstasy still lingers long in the air..... Stand up and be proud. Not only for the tradion of the famous red vee at the SCG, but to be proud to be a supporter of the greatest Rugby League team going around.

Really looking forward to going to this game next Sunday.

Weyman back. He should be fresh, and ready to rip and tear after his 4 match holiday...

We went to the Anzac Day match against the Roosters at the SFS. Hopefully we can repeat what we did to them that day. C'mon Saints fans, lets make our spiritual home, the SCG a sea of red and white. The SCG is after all a place of many happy memories for us older Saints fans. :))

40,000 that’s not a crowd!
