Quite a few forfeits as well as large scores in the teenage grades in round 1 of the Northern conference. May have to reduce team numbers after a few rounds.

Is this usual?
Last year the Northern U/14's had 7 teams in each division. Manly Bros, winners of the Gold are not playing U/15's this year and the bottom team from Silver dropped out, so 5 teams in Gold and 7 in Silver. The scores in the 2 Gold games were 40-12 and 60-0, while in the Silver there were 2 forfeits and the other game is not recorded.

It is common to have regradings after about 5 rounds but what do you do when you only have 5 teams? Relegate 2 and have a 3 team comp?

I Looked at the ladders the get the gold/silver split for last year but if you look at the draws, they started with 5 teams in Gold and 11 in Silver. After 7 rounds, 2 teams were uplifted to Gold while 2 others had disappeared, resulting in a 7/7 split for the rest of the season.

In the 1st round of the Penrith A Grade (Div 1), 4 of the 5 games had margins of 30 points of more, including Emu Plains, featuring ex NZ international, Sam McKendry, beating Windsor 38-6.

NSW Cup has been around since 1908 but it was called Reserve Grade or 2nd Grade.
Ron Massey and Sydney Shield accounts for 18 teams or 17 when you exclude Fiji but then again there is no 3rd Grade competition so deduct another 10 and you only get a net 7 teams from that source.
Flegg runs for the full year whereas the equivalent of the past being Presidents Cup was a short comp made up of players that were in A-C Grade every week. However, the reduction in 18-21 years groupings is even worse than A Grade. Macarthur is basically a Country RL competition with a few western suburbs clubs added.

Here is another example, North Sydney had 18 teams in A & Reserve Grade as recently as 1997, now down to 4 teams and 2 of those reformed this year after several years out.
The McArthur region is an interesting one as it seems to include Western Suburbs (200 teams) as well as Group 6 (300 Teams ) but some of the biggest clubs group 6 clubs like Camden are considered to be part of Sydney ( and definitely has the biggest nursery).

Anyway, total teams this year are 2750 which is an increase on the 2650 I counted last year (I need a life). I included group 6 each year so the comparison is fair but definitely includes some country clubs as you say.
This is consistent with the NRL reporting increased participation but we know the figures include a broader base than in the past.

Sharks are now 400. New teams being added but that’s an outstanding figure. Kurnell has gone from about 9 teams a few years ago to 26. A lot of tag teams and all the senior teams are tag (5) but that’s a good sign of clubs adapting and surviving in a changing environment. That’s the future.

As you say, Sydney has spread so far that the border between Western Suburbs and the northern part of Group 6 is blurred, hence the amalgamation at senior level. From 1920 to 1928 Camden were actually part of the Southern Districts competition, which was one of the 4 comps under the Western Suburbs club, but thereafter played in CRL competitions.
