Tahu scores for Waratahs

Former NRL star Timana Tahu stamped his class on rugby union, scoring with his second touch as the NSW Waratahs downed Queensland 26-10 in their opening trial match of 2008 at Campbelltown Stadium.
The silky-skilled former Newcastle and Parramatta centre played the entire second half of Saturday match at outside centre in the No.21 jersey with his right upper arm heavily strapped.
He got a feel for his career change with a couple of big tackles and created a genuine chance for the a Tahs with his first touch, an in-and-away followed by a clever pass to winger Alfi Mafi in a 20m Tahs surge upfield.
But in the 48th minute the former Kangaroo brought the curious Campbelltown crowd of 4915 alive as he set sail for the corner and dived over out wide.
The Waratahs scored four tries to two in a match played under rugby's experimental law variations between two sides missing most of their big names.
As well as Tahu, fullback Ben Batger and replacements Luke Burgess and Al Manning scored five-pointers while Batger booted two penalty goals.
For the Reds, who wore green jerseys as part of a promotion for environmentally friendly electricity, wingers Henari Veratau and Caleb Brown scored tries.
In an otherwise lacklustre affair, Tahu's touches were all class, from his deft passing game to his swerve and chip kicking.
After NSW had led 11-5 at halftime, his try took them out to a 16-5 lead, but that was cut to 16-10 when Brown capitalised on a toe-through from Walker and poor Waratahs ball security at the back to cross in the 54th minute.
But the home side's territorial dominance began to tell in the second half as first Burgess and then Manning crashed over to extend the lead to 26-10 by the 71st minute.
In a four-quarter affair which began in very warm conditions, NSW five-eighth Daniel Halangahu limped off just before the first break, pushing halfback Josh Valentine out to No.10.
It was the Reds who crossed first, in the 26th minute when Veratau was last to get up in a pile-up out wide for his side to lead 5-3.
But, after a scrappy opening, Valentine's shift seemed to bring with it some cohesion for the Tahs backs and, following some nice ball-through-the-hands movement, Batger crashed over in the 34th minute for NSW to take the lead 8-5.
The fullback added another penalty goal in the 39th for the Waratahs to go to the break up 11-5.
Tahu wasn't getting carried away with his impressive debut.
"It was a good little hit-out, I learned a lot from that game," he said.
"A few times I got stuck out in positions and I made few mistakes but that's what trials are for and I'll fix them up."
His coach, Ewen McKenzie, was impressed though.
"We'll go over the video tape and we're going to find things we can do better and he can do better and I just think it was a good game for him," he said.
"To get a try obviously will help him mentally just to say, 'I'm meant to be out here'.
"We just saw some really nice touches, a little bit of football here and there ... that's good, that's what we want him to do."
New Queensland coach Phil Mooney said his big guns would be back for his side's next trial, against the Auckland-based Blues.
"Realistically we gave the back end of our squad a pretty good hit-out tonight," he said.

If he stays injury free he will be a sensation. They will forget about Stirling Mortlock very quickly when they see what T can do.

Tahu will kill them in union, if he plays half as good as he did in league he'll be the world's best back in union by a long shot.

haa. i read on fox sports news that he got a try with his second touch. the way i read it it seemed he did something brilliant to score. was actually a pretty dull try. went through a few sets of hands and tahu ran for the corner and dived over. he is capable of, and scored plenty for us and newcastle, much better that really show his athletic ability on the field. can't wait to hear what they say when he shows his true ability.

TIMANA Tahu says he's licking his lips at the prospect of coming up against tired rugby forwards following his majestic first run for the NSW Waratahs last night.

The former Kangaroo and NRL superstar mesmerised the Queensland backline in the Waratahs' 26-10 trial win at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, putting on a skill-packed performance which could have fast-tracked his Wallaby aspirations.

With all eyes on Tahu, the ex-Newcastle and Parramatta centre set up one of his side's more impressive attacking raids with his first touch and scored a try with his second.

"I think come late in the halves there's a lot of mis-matches where there's forwards out on the edges," the 27-year-old said.

"I start licking my lips and start dribbling a little bit when that happens.

"Usually you've got big fast centres up against you all the time in league and here but late in the halves you start seeing the forwards bludging a little bit.

"I felt like there was heaps of space around, it's just a matter of trying to get yourself in position."

Perhaps more ominous for NSW's Super 14 opponents in 2008 is Tahu's attitude.

He got a feel for his career change last night with two bone-crushing tackles on unsuspecting Reds Lloyd Johansson and Andrew Walker and he said he'd brought the passion that came with wearing a blue State of Origin across with him.

"Probably playing NRL you're just playing for your club but the best thing about playing for the Waratahs is you're playing for your state so you've got to have a bit of passion for your jumper," he said.

"I treat it the same as playing Origin. It's a big thing you're representing your state so I put a lot of pride in this jumper."

After declaring his ambition to be a Wallaby, Tahu's switch has suddenly made Australia's outside centre stocks bulge, with national captain Stirling Mortlock and Western Force ex-leaguey Ryan Cross also in great form last year, but the Waratahs recruit said learning the position would be his biggest challenge.

"I'm supposed to be trying to conserve some energy instead of trying to roam around," he said of his first hit-out.

"It's just little things like that. I feel like I'm still playing rugby league a little bit where you play the ball and you've got to try and get back into your positions, so I think I've got to stop doing that a little bit and just fold back."

Meanwhile, Waratahs five-eighth Daniel Halangahu looks likely to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks with an ankle injury picked up in last night's trial.

Halangahu will have scans this week to determine the extent of the injury.

Halfback Josh Valentine will also have scans but is expecting to be cleared of a gluteus muscle problem.

In a spectacular pre-season debut in the 15-man code, Tahu crossed for NSW with just his second touch of the ball and created the Waratahs' best opportunity with his first.

The performance underlined why selectors must fast-track him into the national side.

The Waratahs scored four tries to two in a spirited contest in front of 4915 at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, with the home side showing a number of positive signs despite typical pre-season handling and execution early in the game.

"It is the ultimate goal to play for the gold jersey but at the moment I still feel like I am learning the game,'' Tahu said.

"First things first, I want to try and play good for the Waratahs.

"Hopefully we can have a better season than we did last year.''

On his first five-pointer, Tahu said: "It was pretty cruisy. I got passed the ball and there was a big open space ... it was put on a platter for me.''

is still january and its a non-event trial with few name players ..... be interesting to see what sort of crowd a reserve grade league match would pull on january 27 .... i'm no rah-rah lover, but gotta put it in perspective

I will watch with interest when tahu plays for the waratahs ..... i have to say, I enjoyed his short stint at parra so much that he came to be one of my all time favourite league players - that defense he was pulling off last season was f'n brilliant

Yeah it was a trial out in the middle of League territory.

I wish I'd known it was on, I would have liked to go and have a look.

Tigers reserve grade match probably would pull the same crowd, thats why its so pathetic as in Rugby Union NSW represents the whole state youd think even people who wanted to watch union would head to the game from anywhere in NSW.

Anyway i dont really care what Tahu does in rugby union, nor do i care what any league player does. I dont carry any hate because they switched i just dont have any high hopes for them. They play another code now.

That's a pretty dumb thing to say. It was a trial in Campbelltown on Australia Day. People most likely had other things to do.

A rugby game, a non event? Hold the phone strider!!!!

Rugby officials would have had to have been disappointed. They would have only scheduled the game out there to get publicity and pull a crowd. It was a trial, but it also was NSW and Qld, wasn't it, not like it was a 'club' match.

Agreed.

I hate how people compare NRL to Super 14, NRL is club footy and Super 14 is borderline rep footy in union.

meh - whatever ... i don't love union enough to sit here arguing about whether they got a sh*t crowd or not - I just think it needs to be put in perspective
