Taking the 2 to go 2 - 0

This has to be the stupidest call any team can make after getting a penalty in the opening minutes of a game. The Dragons did it last night, other teams have done it earlier in the season, and unless I'm not remembering correctly, every time it has blown up in the face of the team that did it in a big way.

WHY? You have been gifted a golden chance to grab all the early momentum and you piss it away for 2 points that very likely won't even matter in the end. This is another reason why the 7 tackle set and this fascination with short drop outs are so dumb, teams just can't see the benefit of going for the in goal capture and repeat possession anymore. The "grind" is going extinct, all because of this silly conception that it makes for boring footy. I enjoy watching my team be clinical and ruthless (despite the fact they have been far from that recently), so because it frustrates the fans on the receiving end, we need to throw the baby out with the bath water??

.

Nobody forced Holmes to drop the ball. It was a bad error. Could have happened first tackle if they took the tap. They're just a bad team.

Can't make the hard yards, that is compounded by having the worst kicking game in the league. Worst yardage per set plus the worst kick at the end of each set equals horrible field position. It's only a matter of time before they get overwhelmed.

I'm pretty sure they had 3 players starting last night that were dogs rejects from their wooden spoon side a could of years back. That says everything about the team right now.

I am shocked and stunned that a defensive powerhouse in the Dragins could concede a try, let alone have 10 put on them after taking a match winning 2 pount lead in the 2nd minute of a game.

this fascination with short drop outs are so dumb,
I feel like there's a redress going on with this, to a point. In the game against us, in poor conditions, the Raiders went long more often than not. I've seen more teams recently go long, although I will admit there's still a few who go short in good conditions in the right situations. But I think it's far less automatic than last year when the rule came in

As for 2-0, it's weak. I wouldn't mind a day where penalty goals didn't exist, and we relied more on other ways of punishing indiscretions like potentially a five-minute bin for things like slowing the ball down, and 10 for the head shots etc.

Mostly it's dumb. For the Dargons it defs was

But it can make sense to take a gimme two at times as well. If you've only got your reserve kicker and the replacement is plod, or if the conditions are shithouse.

The one that gets me more is the two taken when someone from the opposition goes to the bin? Like, you just give them a few minutes to gather themselves, get messages out about any positional shifts to cover etc.

Can your team defend and has a good goal kicker?

Then take the two especially if the opposition can make tackles on the goal line.

It was the difference in the 2023 GF.

(Sure it was to go 8-0 but history says it worked out, LOL Walsh and ARey).
