Wests Tigers rescue Tupou's career

7:00am Wednesday 8th July 2009

By Dave Craven »

Sacked Bulls winger Tame Tupou has been given a lifeline by NRL outfit Wests Tigers.
The former Kiwi international was dismissed by Bradford in January due to long-running injury problems.
With 18 months remaining on his contract, he took the Bulls to an RFL tribunal in March but the club’s decision was upheld.
Tupou – while still struggling to fully overcome last year’s cruciate knee injury – has since been serving a six-month notice period, which was set to expire at the end of July.
He had failed to strike any sort of deal with another Super League club and until recently had still been turning up daily at the Bulls training ground for continued rehabilitation.
The former Brisbane Bronco flew back to Australia last Monday though and is now set to attempt to resurrect his career with the lowly Tigers.
Bradford today made a brief statement, saying: “Bradford Bulls has agreed to the request of Wests Tigers to release Tame Tupou’s registration with immediate effect.”
He hasn’t played since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last June and still wasn’t deemed fit for selection during the tribunal process more than nine months later.
Today’s news ends a sorry saga for both parties.
The Bulls had high hopes for the big winger, especially when he scored ten tries in his opening 12 games after arriving from Brisbane as a replacement for Lesley Vainikolo in June 2007.
But he injured his knee while on international duty later that year with the Bulls claiming they were never told the full extent of the problem.
Tupou, 26, started the 2008 campaign but was a shadow of his former self and managed just nine matches before conceding the knee needed surgery.

"...struggling to fully overcome last year’s cruciate knee injury..."
"...long-running injury problems..."
"... hasn’t played since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last June ..."
"...a shadow of his former self ..."

So, he can't cut the mustard in a struggling Bradford team but might be a poential NRL player with us. Hmm.

Where is the logic.

The circus continues. Why the hell are we intent on recruiting outside backs when it is plain to see we need some grunt upfront

That's an easy one... It's so our outside backs can be turned into back rowers, and our back rowers into props.

If you think Ryan is good, then you will love this bloke,we need a good winger,I don't know if he fits the bill though.

If he is on little money, I think he is worth a go. He does have ability, but his head can be a bit of a worry. Not unlike Tuaki before he sorted himself out.

We could be getting a prop in Sam Burgess (Bradford Bulls youngster). Good player.

Well, WT recruitment has got me stuffed. I cannot figure any logic to it besides cheap. Tupou from Bradford- long term injury, Woolnough (rumoured) from Penrith- long term injury and WT re-sign Lazarus (long term injury). Do you think Medicare or one of the private health insurance companies are going to be a sleeve sponsor too?????

Well on current form we will continue to be the laughing stock of the NRL competition amongst player agents and players if this keeps up. The only recruited player so far for next year not suffering a long term injury is Taumata from Melbourne- but he comes with a bad boy cloud hanging over his head. Again the common factor would be cheap I reckon. Ahhh, bodes well for our continued success in 2010 - ah yes, we have to rememebr its only a game and not have any expectations of final 8 placings according to Teflon, Simmons & WT Board. Good to see Teflon is living up to that self imposed KPI.....

Apparently after his injury he has developed the same sort of 'demon's" Benji had. Benji thinks that he may be able to help Tupou overcome these - therefore he is a good buy along as he was bought at a low cost because hes not reliable at this point.

Ive seen him play - once he gets rid of these "Demons" he will be awesome!!
