Hi st helens fan here. Their are strong rumours all over england that james tamou has signed for us next season on 3 year deal.cant say we no much about him as he has been out the international scene for a few years. What are your thoughts on him and is he still any good. The last nrl import we had jospeh paulo has been a bit of a donkey for us and only plays if their are injuries

He has been great for us, easily our best prop last year after a bit of a slow start when he arrived.
Most of us would love to keep him for the right $$$ but if he heads to you guys I think he would be a great signing.
He is big in defence ,carries forward well and is surprisingly light on his feet with a good little step at the line.

Sounds like he will go well in sl if he does come. We have a giant task on our hands replacing thompson who has been the best prop st helens have had since james graham left the club. I remeber watching tamou about years ago playing for OZ and thought he was stand out up front but not seen him play international for a few years now. Mind you he looked good the other day watching you guys on tv

If true will be a good signing. Wasn't a popular signing at first due to his speculated contract size but he has been very solid for Penrith.

I really hope he stays here. If he does go & you were happy with Merrin, you will cream your strides over Aussie Jim.

Goodluck to tamou he deserves a good finish to his career.I can't see Penrith giving him more than 500k a season at 31 with a host of young forwards coming through. He has done ok in his time here but we need to promote leniu hetherington leota and co.

He's kept himself fit and looks good for another two years easily. But if he's asking $500k or more I think its too much, especially in the current climate.

I don't see how there can be any doubt he was on insane overs for us like many others have been.

Paying that money for him was my only issue with his signing. Money aside he is a good solid front rower. But like the Hiku and Merrin signings insane money was thrown at guys who couldn't possibly deliver value for money for us. The players lost for these types of signings just didn't give us a chance to improve.

Atleast Tamou will leave with a decent legacy for us when he departs though. Few others have left as jokes or become jokes after leaving

I'll be honest and hope Penrith come back and offer 2 years (with an option of 3) on reduced monies. He's been real good for us especially since making captain. That's what I'd like.

Whether it happens or not who knows,

When Tamou first signed with us the reports were he was on big money ranging between $500 - $600K a season. That was 4 years ago. Now the so called pundits or so called experts are suggesting it up towards $800K. It is just ridiculous. I have no idea what he was on but I would suggest the original figures were probably the most accurate. He is at the age where it is too big a risk to give him a three year deal on say 400-500k a year. He has been very good for us but time to move on.

The media reported he was supposed to be on a $750k a season from day one. (4 years / $3m dollar) that figure only ever got lowered by people on here trying to claim he was on basically half that.

But hey we certainly haven't got a reputation for paying overs to players on long contracts... Although for Tamou you can see how it could happen. We actually had competition in a bidding war to attract him here. The overs to kids yet to debut or with a handful of games behind them who aren't off contract though just doesn't make sense. Minimum wage and a shot at NRL would keep most of them happy to begin with.

If the media reported it, it must be true! How the hell would they know what he is on?
The only people would know, would be the club, Tamou’s manager and, Tamou.
Whatever the true figure is his manager will inflate it to the media, so it looks like he did a good job for his client.

Blade23 said (about a week or so ago) that Tamou was never on 750-850k as reported by media. I'd take his word for it.

Of course he's not. He's the only guy we apparently never paid overs to. We got into a bidding war for him but got him dirt cheap while instead choosing to pay $750k+ to guys we never let hit the market.
