Taylor v Hagan feud reignited
Taylor v Hagan feud reignited
By Dean Ritchie | July 09, 2008 12:00am
PARRAMATTA coach Michael Hagan and his Souths counterpart Jason Taylor have reignited their ugly feud ahead of Saturday night's match at ANZ Stadium.
"He's not a friend of mine,'' Hagan told The Daily Telegraph.
The Eels and Rabbitohs confront each other for the first time since the two coaches were involved in a nasty verbal exchange at the end of a match at Parramatta Stadium last July. The war of words came as Taylor walked past Hagan on his way to a post-match press conference.
It is well known that the pair dislike each other with Hagan saying last night: "I don't think about him all that often. I've got to be honest, I wouldn't say he was a friend of mine. He's not someone I come into contact with.
"Any respect I may have had for him I lost after the events of last year. I thought he might have wanted to apologise but he didn't. That's up to him I guess.''
Taylor said he thought he was a friend of Hagan's - but was wrong. "I find his comments surprising considering we have had a couple of amicable yet brief conversations since last year,'' Taylor told The Daily Telegraph last night.
"I thought it (the incident) was water under the bridge. I thought he was someone I could continue to say hello to if we happened to bump into each other.''
At the time, Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald labelled Taylor petulant and immature.
"That's for JT to reply to, not me,'' said Souths CEO Shane Richardson, when asked about the feud. "I wasn't involved in any of that last year.''
It is alleged Taylor said to Hagan last year: "Brian Smith is rebuilding (in Newcastle) what you f...ed up there. How f...ed are you? What's here (at Parramatta) was already in place.''
Hagan then remembered Taylor's comments at last year's Parramatta presentation night, when Taylor allegedly claimed Hagan would struggle to win without Andrew Johns. Hagan then told Taylor: "We won without Joey today.''
Last night when asked for a comment, Fitzgerald said: "I'm not saying anything. I'll give it a miss.''
Souths will enter the match full of confidence after four successive wins. On Monday night, the Rabbitohs secured a remarkable win over the Bulldogs after being behind 24-6 early in the second half.
The Eels continue to struggle and were beaten 22-16 in last Sunday's derby by old rivals Penrith to drop out of the top eight.
