A team under pressure will eventually turn on itself as the pressure boils over and since we've got a few strong personalities in the group cliques are bound to happen. If it does exist, it doesn't explain any problems IMO, it's a symptom of them.
This runs way deeper than team unity. Case in point - the Aus cricket team, when they began the slide down tempers started to flare and sub-groups formed, but this summer past, once they got that 'winning' feeling again, everyone became best friends. Team unity was a symptom of team success, not the other way around.
Winning is a team effort, losing needs a scapegoat.
