Big men to make an impact

Two of Canberra’s leading outside backs return to the Raiders starting team this weekend, but it’s on the bench that coach Matt Elliott is looking for a big impact.
Centre Adam Mogg and winger Craig Frawley come straight back into the Raiders starting team for this Sunday’s match against the Bulldogs at Sydney Showground.

Mogg has missed two games because of suspension for a dangerous throw, while Frawley returns from an ankle injury.

But Elliott has saved his biggest changes for an extended bench, naming three giant New Zealand forwards.

Former Sharks prop Jason Williams and exciting Raiders junior Willie Raston, join one-time New Zealand Test player Andrew Lomu on a five-man bench. Elliott said two of the three would play this Sunday, with a final decision to be made at the end of the week.

Lomu, 187cm and 106kg, made a strong debut for the Raiders on Saturday night, just a week after joining Canberra from the Sharks.

Williams, 178cm and 115kg, is also close to his top-grade debut with the Raiders, having joined the club in April.

Raston, 182cm and 106kg, is the nephew of former Raiders and New Zealand prop John Lomax. The 21-year-old is viewed as an exciting prospect.

Elliott has promoted in-form prop Josh Miller into his starting team, but said he wants more forward impact off his bench.

“We’ve got heaps of mobility in our pack but we’re not really bending the opposition’s defensive line consistently enough,” Elliott said. “I thought Andrew Lomu provided us with a little bit more punch last weekend and we’re looking for someone else to up the ante.

“We’ve got a lot of guys who are capable of playing extended time, so having an impact player to come on for a short period is really what we’re looking for.”

Backrower Alan Tongue, who made an incredible 56 tackles when he started against the Broncos on Saturday, returns to his familiar utility role on the bench.

“The thing he does for us when he comes off the bench is he sparks us up,” Elliott said. “The bench is such a vital part of every team now, it’s the first thing I look at when we play an opposition.”

As good a side as any that we can field at the moment. Looking forward to seeing the big blokes fire. I'm expecting a big one from Campo this week, I think he will feel more settled in the side now.

if 2 out of 3 big forwards are going to play I would think Elliott has decided that Gaffa will be in the 17.Just when will this guy learn. He does nothing for the team Elliott.Somebody get the hook out for Elliott please. What a wasted space on the bench.

I thought Hodgson had a very poor game on the weekend. He's been at the club for years and that was a inept performance from him IMO.

Um.... where's Hodgo???

Can't believe he has been dropped.

Good side though but surely there is space for him.

Perhaps this whole no Kahler, no Hodgson thing has to do with what Elliot said about there being competition for spots. Maybe he is doing it so that nobody will rest on their laurels.

Wow. I'd love to see Gaf drop off that bench. That would be an enourmous bench.

I don't mind this team. I think we can win with it.

Dropped an absolute sitter of a pass and showed no urgency in falling on the ball. Wasn't only that but overall it wasn't one of his better games.

THE OGRE IS BACK!!!!!

Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes has one of his most experienced starting line-ups for this Sunday’s all important clash against the Canberra Raiders at the Sydney Showground. Folkes has named Mark O’Meley in the starting line-up after a lengthy lay-off due to ligament damage suffered in the lower leg back in April.

At one stage it was expected that O'Meley would not return from the injury he suffered against New Zealand in the Bundaberg Test Match until round 23.

O’Meley will partner Roy Asotasi up front with Folkes naming NSW Origin five eight Braith Anasta at lock with Corey Hughes slotting into the five eight position.

The inclusion of both O’Meley and Hughes certainly provides the Bulldogs with a much more experienced starting thirteen then what they have had for the past couple of months. Anasta, Sherwin and Hughes will also prove the Dogs with plenty of kicking options.

Youngster Cameron Phelps is the only rookie named in the starting line-up. Phelps has made a strong fist of first grade since making his debut in round 10 against the Sea eagles.

On the interchange Folkes has named four forwards, with two rookies Dallas McIlwain and Charlie Tonga more than holding their own in first grade whilst the relatively inexperienced Chris Armit and Adam Brideson have also made strong contributions this season.

That's a pretty strong side and hisotry tells us teams always have a break out performance against the Raiders. If ever there was a way to break a losing streak, play the Raiders.

Warriors last year immediately springs to mind.

poor form Elliot

Cross - Gorrrrrrrrne
Tyran - Gorrrrrrrrne
Kahler - Gorrrrrrrne, though he will be back soon enough because he is a talented fella.
Gafa - Soon to be Gorrrne

As for the others...
Croker - You want him gorrrne? Did you see any game when he was out injured? Sure he drops the odd ball, but he does a lot of the little things nobody else does.
Frawley - What's wrong with him? So he's been injured, BFW!! He has talent and given time will show it.

Man, with either Williams or Raston probably dropping off the bench, that forward pack for PL looks quite good!
