Laurie tackles his demotion head-on

WESTS TIGERS cult figure Daine Laurie has rushed back from a family funeral in time to take his place in the Balmain Ryde NSW Cup side to play Wentworthville this afternoon.
Dropped by coach Tim Sheens after an uncharacteristically limp round-one performance against the Raiders, the 24-year-old excitement machine was set to resume his spot in the line-up against the Roosters on Friday night before learning of the death of his aunt in Yamba on the North Coast.
"Tim said I could have the whole weekend off to be with the family, but then he'd have to play me in premier league the next couple of weeks," Laurie told
The Sun-Herald. "But I didn't want to do that.
"It hurt missing out against the Cowboys - I kind of expected it after the Raiders - but I want to force my way back into the team to play the Panthers next week.
"I've been doing a lot of work on my defence, and I'll be doing anything I can in NSW Cup to make sure I'm back in NRL next week."
Laurie, whose take-no-prisoners hits and lethal running game earned him a loyal following after his round 15 debut last season, said he wanted to shake the "impact player" tag and emulate Broncos legend Shane Webcke.
"I'm learning to conserve my energy instead of going flat-out all the time."
