That Arrogant, Pig Headed Bennett Strikes again!

This forthe Wayne Bennett and Aussie haters from the SMH column the The Fitz Files...

TFF has always maintained that if there is a classier act in Australian sport than Wayne Bennett, then I don't know who it is. At the conclusion of last Saturday's Test match, Bennett organised for his charges to keep the photographers, journalists et al waiting - even their beers - and instead quietly go to the other side of the ground where a young bloke by the name of Matt King was waiting. Young Matt had broken his neck in a rugby league game, and Bennett had not only got wind of it but knew where he'd be sitting with his family. Bennett led the team over to him, where they climbed the fence, chatted to him and his family, gave him a signed shirt and invited him back to the dressing room.

What an arrogant, pig headed boar as someone delicately put it in one thread.

Oh, and by the way, it was Wayne Bennett who has also invited the IRL to appoint an english UK SL ref (preferrably the impressive RussellSmith) for the test tonight and not Mr Black...yes, it was rejected, though another example of Bennett putting the best interest of the game first. I am in agreeance that we should be putting a man in the middle that has BIG MATCH experience as tempers will flair in this encounter.

Wayne Bennett also brought about the tri series concept in which MOST have fallen in love with this off season in which it will be an annual event...how do we as Australian League fans put up with this guy as someone asked ? I ask, how are you guys (UK) suriving without someone like him ?

Wayne Bennett also brought about the tri series concept

No he didn't. Last year he "came up with" this brilliant idea, when a tri-series involving NZ, Australia and GB was held in 1999.

if every RL coach or executive cared about the game like Bennet does, RL would be a hell of a lot stronger.....

Let me put it this way, it was who Bennett pushed this concept again with the NRL & IRL boards as this was a concept he thought was in the best interest of Rugby League internationally, once again a good idea was put on the backburner (like IRL was and has been) and been brought it back from it's hiatus(sp)...thus far, he has been proven to be correct.

If we want to get technical on dates, no doubt we could even go farther back in time to when the concept was truly brought up...though, who really cares right ?

and doesnt cars what anyone thinks of him

While I do think that bennet has played favourates with a couple qlder's (berrigan and carrol spring to mind...) instead of chosing the team completely on form, I do agree that he has been unfairly demonised by the media... let's face it, he did offer to have both GB V Aus matches reffed by an English ref and he did give international league some much needed momentum by lobbying to have the tri-series introduced!

My only gripe with WB is his comments re: Glen Black. I've made positive comments about him on this forum - i even used his book in a presentation.

Good luck to, Glen.

The treatment he has received so far by the Australian Rugby League has been nothing short of abysmal.

If Bennet wanted Smith then the RFL did the right thing in rejecting that, Their belief in neutral refs won the day and that is good.

Bennet has done a lot for international RL and he should be commended for it. However his comments re: Black undo a lot, but not all, of that work.

its the same as any coach. they pick the players they think can do the job, and because they know players personally who they know will do the job, they pick them
