That old chestnut

I have been a member of the Sharks club, licensed and football, for some time. I went down there last night and had a few drinks with the wife. Played the machines, without my arm being twisted and walked out. Aafter some simple arithmetic we were at least four hundred in front. This is not an isolated incident.

There seems to be, within our exalted council, a campaign to denegrate the club. They must be estatic with the latest campaign to rip into the clubs by our exalted state government.

Am I angry. You bet. Are the Sharks an intergral symbol of the Shire? Why then does the council treat them like lepers? Why do our alleged representatives continually fail to give us what we want? They cite possible damage to the mangroves. Why have they allowed the Toyota site, several new industrial estates and a number of new roads to be developed nearby but continue to cite potental damage to the same natural ecology for their refusal to any form of development to the Sharks site?

My motive for this tirade?

I want to be able to take friends and business associates down to the club and footie and treat them to a world class facility. This sort of thing has a habit of mushrooming. Most councillers don't care. I stand to make nothing out of this.

That is a good question

But do you expect any initiative and pro-business thinking from the old fuddy duddies on the Labor dominated council?

No wonder we're being screwed over - Phil Blight is mayor (just looking at the SSC website now).

The next mayoral election is 27 March 2004.

E-mail addresses (using previously used formats)
Mayor Phil Blight - phil.blight@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Deputy Mayor Tracie Sonda - tracie.sonda@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Kevin Schreiber - kevin.schreiber@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Lorraine Kelly - lorraine.kelly@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Bob Spencer - bob.spencer@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Jenni Gormley - jenni.gormley@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Lorraine Rodden - lorraine.rodden@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Matt Daniel - matt.daniel@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Scott Docherty - scott.docherty@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr George Hurley - george.hurley@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Ken McDonell - ken.mcdonell@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr David Redmond - david.redmond@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Dawn Emerson - dawn.emerson@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Genevieve Rankin - genevieve.rankin@sutherland.nsw.gov.au
Cr Steve Simpson - steve.simpson@sutherland.nsw.gov.au

Now I have no idea of the council electoral boundaries, so I'll just list who represents each ward.

A Ward: Kevin Schreiber, Lorraine Kelly, Bob Spencer
B Ward: Phil Blight, Jenni Gormley, Lorraine Rodden
C Ward: Matt Daniel, Scott Docherty, Tracie Sonda
D Ward: George Hurley, Ken McDonell, David Redmond
E Ward: Dawn Emerson, Genevieve Rankin, Steve Simpson

Labor councillors: Phil Blight, Scott Docherty, Ken McDonell, Dawn Emerson
Liberal councillors: Kevin Schreiber, Lorraine Rodden, Matt Daniel, Steve Simpson
ShireWatch councillors: Lorraine Kelly, Bob Spencer, Tracie Sonda, George Hurley
Independent councillors: Jenni Gormley, David Redmond, Genevieve Rankin

Liberals: 4
ALP: 4
ShireWatch: 4
Independents: 3

Now, can someone tell me who the heck are "ShireWatch"? Some Greens/ALP aligned group I'd presume.

As we know, the ALP councillors are bunch of Greens lackeys who survive on pandering to fundaloony environmentalist groups. So we have to focus on lobbying the Independents and ShireWatch.

VOICE YOUR ANGER NOW!

Tracie Sonda is pretty left-wing I think, so I'd say ShireWatch is that way inclined. :(

They're not officially aligned to Greens/ALP, however their platform is anti-development. Setup after the Northies and Meriton (Caringbah)developments got approval.

What I want to know is, where were the protestors when the Cecil Hotel got torn down ??? That could have been the pride of Cronulla.

Hey Tama, are you planning a political career, with the extreme right of the liberal party? With a conservative world view like yours you could be the next Tony Abbot. Mate, the young liberals will be beating a path to your door.

Good question BS but most on this forum would be too young to know. For that matter what about the Cecil Ballroom/tearooms directly in front of the pub? You can view old photos in the Cronulla mall and local historical records. When you look at the abortions they put up to replace them u just know they had $$$$$$$$$$$ on their minds.

Just a little history. The old Cecil pub was a wonderful art deco hotel. The best part, in my opinion, was the beer garden, as we affectionately called them. A grassy lawn with beautiful garden and large palms. You could sit in the sun after a day in the surf and enjoy and ale or two. (or 12!)

I went to two council meetings during the year re the Sharks Development. Generally, the voting was:
Liberals - in favour of Sharks development
Labor & Shire Watch - against Sharks development
I'm pretty sure Independent David Redmond voted for the Sharks, Genevieve Rankin was not there (abstain). I forget how Gormley voted - I think it was against.
The Leagues Club is in A Ward:
- Schreiber supports the development
- Spencer, along with the now deposed Paul Smith, is the most outspoken AGAINST the Sharks development (Got me beat, he represents the Leagues Club's Ward and he seems to HATE the Sharks)
- not sure about Kelly.

Interesting to note that the council denies the Sharks their development but allows that skyscraping monstrosity on the Kingsway at Caringbah, that thing is unbelievable...every time I drive past it I am shocked.

Does anybody here know about the ward boundaries, or live in D Ward? That ward doesn't have a single Liberal councillor.

If your ever in caringbah have a look from the coles carpark. It reminds me of the highrise dumps in redfern/waterloo.

The greatest hypocrisy is councils alleged fear for the mangroves but they have allowed unprecedented development only metres from them just down the road from the club.

I know someone who will very soon be on the council and I will be furiously lobbying that person for the development to go ahead however the ball is in the Sharks' court to get it right.

We want maximum money from it, I dont agree with just selling the land off to other people to get rich. They should put some serious thought into this and earn some serious money.
