The 2005 Christmas Thread

Well I might as well come out by saying that Christmas will be the topic of the last Ian's Insight for the year. The only thing I don't like about Christmas is the fact that I can't be in more than one place at once. Several months out form the time all the family members start asking me what I'm doing and are trying to get me to be with them at a particular time and day. Makes me feel like a wishbone sometimes

I love Christmas! It's the best time of year for me.

In our family, we start Christmas when dad gets up in the roof and drags down all the Christmas decorations. Our bar is filled with Santa and Mrs Clause, ice rinks and reeves and lights and music thingys... all the things that little kids and big kids can enjoy! These spill over to the dining and lounge rooms, with the Christmas tree in the lounge room and Christmas lights in the front windows. We have a nativity scene, frostie the snow man, Santa and reindeer outside and the fairy lights aswell.

Christmas to me, is the above, the smell of a real Christmas tree (which I fought and fought for, but we didn't get this yr :( ), family, the extended relations (moreso family friends) and loads of eating!

On Christmas Eve, we have a party at my place. Family and friends come... and if you've been good, Santa may come to give some Christmas messages (and if you're lucky an approximate time for landing in my local area :) ) Adults out back, kids in the pool. MTV on with the marathons... or Carols at the Fish Bowl, if the adults get their way! Sausage sizzle, lots of nibblies, desert galore and friends.

At the end of the night we leave a beer, some cookies and carrots for Santa and the reindeer. (Note, I'm the youngest without the neices and nephews about-in our house it's "You don't believe, you don't receive")

Christmas morning, I've always been woken by my older siblings. Now, we get woken up by the kid nextdoor at 9am... who is "hungry" and has been waiting for breakfast since 7am cos they all woke up at 5am. We have Christmas brekkie (champagne and orange juice, eggs, bacon etc) with the neighbours... and the tag along neighbours (three very close families). Have done for years!

Christmas lunch is with my dad's family. Only a small gathering, but really nice. Usually have seafood (which I hate! But, as a good kid, I've always sat at the table, as told. My neice likes to sit next to me to shove prawn heads in my face throughout the brunch). Then, yes there's more... we have actual lunch! Baked dinner... all the trimmings. You name it, we have it! And not to forget... the Christmas pudding, homemade... mmmm... with money! (Never liked the pudding as a kid... but if you don't eat it, you don't get the money in it... so I, like my father did when he was little, learnt to like it!)

THEN! It's rest time... which i hate, cos I never want to rest. Christmas should not have any breaks! I get bored...

Then... starting last yr, we travelled to Rowwies. But now, they're nextdoor... so we just have to roll nextdoor for some games and activities and much more drinking and eating. Usually Rowwie and I take over th tv, MTV Viva La Bam, Pimp My Ride and Wild Boys marathons...

Sometimes my nan (mum's side) and aunty would come up from Canberra for Christmas. If not, we used to go down there on Boxing day. So for 3 days straight... it was Christmas to me! Nan passed away last year after Christmas. Good thing about it was that she actually came to my house for Christmas and shared the whole experience with us last year. She hadn't done that for over 8 years. So the tradition of Christmas means even more to me now!

So... as you see... I'd be lost without Christmas and all the events that go with it! And I'm extremely excited about the whole thing!

I know it's not exactly a Christmas Carol, but this track has always meant a lot to me around Christmas. bluesbreaker knows what I mean.

I'm not a huge Paul Kelly fan (not familiar enough with him) but this song's just so bittersweet. I love it.

How to Make Gravy - Paul Kelly
Hello Dan, it's Joe here, I hope you're keeping well
It's the 21st of December, and now they're ringing the last bells
If I get good behaviour, I'll be out of here by July
Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas Day, please don't let 'em cry for me
I guess the brothers are driving down from Queensland and Stella's flying in from the coast
They say it's gonna be a hundred degrees, even more maybe, but that won't stop the roast
Who's gonna make the gravy now? I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine and don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang
And give my love to Angus and to Frank and Dolly,
Tell 'em all I'm sorry I screwed up this time
And look after Rita, I'll be thinking of her early Christmas morning
When I'm standing in line

I hear Mary's got a new boyfriend, I hope he can hold his own
Do you remember the last one? What was his name again?
(Just a little too much cologne)
And Roger, you know I'm even gonna miss Roger
'Cause there's sure as hell no one in here I want to fight
Oh praise the Baby Jesus, have a Merry Christmas,
I'm really gonna miss it, all the treasure and the trash
And later in the evening, I can just imagine,
You'll put on Junior Murvin and push the tables back
And you'll dance with Rita, I know you really like her,
Just don't hold her too close, oh brother please don't stab me in the back
I didn't mean to say that, it's just my mind it plays up,
Multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact
You know I love her badly, she's the one to save me,
I'm gonna make some gravy, I'm gonna taste the fat
Tell her that I'm sorry, yeah I love her badly, tell 'em all I'm sorry,
And kiss the sleepy children for me
You know one of these days, I'll be making gravy,
I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay 'em all back.

Christmas for me used to be a bit of a non-event. Being in a family where the only thing that mattered was having enough food cooked for a small country and once that was done, they were too tired to move, it used to get a little dull.
However since several of my aunties, counsins, friends and other relatives have had children, I'm finding myself enjoying christmas sooo much more. The magic of it all for them is truly contagious and i love being around children at this time of year when all they want to do is play with their toys and tell you all about how "santa" left them a letter and the cookies and carrots they left out for him were gone! It reminds me so much of when i was young.
I hope everyone has a beautiful christmas, and a wonderful promising new year! :D

Christmas is nothing special anymore...I used to be kinda excited about what it could bring but in the last couple of years I have had nothing but dissapointment.

This year I have two parents that I would rather not see because they have abandoned me in my hour of need and then expect me to show up on Christmas with a big smile and go oh well I could be dead. I don't want anything from them because when I needed a place to stay they turned their backs on me and I think that would have been more useful to me then a gift voucher and some clothes.

This Christmas I will see them shortly and then I will come back to Bushies place sit down have a beer and a smoke and forget what day it is...

My Mum's also said you're welcome to spend Christmas with us, Randy. Would just mean a wee drive on your part.

Yep Merry Christmas to all my loved ones and friends on here. In a world full of hate and anger it makes me smile knowing that the birthdate of Jesus can unite the good people in this world.

With that said, don't forget who's birthday it is today. :)
