The 2022 World Cup may not take place in Qatar

QATAR will not host the World Cup in 2022 because of scorching temperatures, a top FIFA official says. “I think that at the end of the day the 2022 World Cup will not take place in Qatar,” Theo Zwanziger, a German member of FIFA, said in an interview with Sport Bild Plus.
The former head of the German football federation (DFB) cited high summer temperatures as the reason Qatar would lose the right to host football’s global showpiece.
“As Mr Zwanziger himself says, it’s his personal opinion,” a FIFA spokesman responded to AFP subsidiary SID when asked about the German’s statement.
Zwanziger said: “Doctors say, and I had insisted on this point in the protocol, that they cannot guarantee that a World Cup can be held in summer in these conditions.”
While Qatar has reportedly developed stadium cooling systems, Mr Zwanziger said “the World Cup involves not only stadiums. There are fans coming from the four corners of the world who will be concerned by the heat”.
“The first incident putting a life in danger will be subject to an investigation. And that, nobody in the FIFA Executive Committee would want to reply to.”

But in an interview with Die Welt newspaper, Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the Qatar 2022 organising committee, declared himself “sure that the 2022 World Cup would take place in Qatar”.
“No, I’m not worried. Firstly because there’s no basis to lose the World Cup,” he said.
“And secondly because it’s the first World Cup in the Middle East.
“When people think of this region, it’s rather in terms of conflict. The World Cup will be an occasion to unite peoples. It will leave a positive heritage.”
Controversy has plagued FIFA’s awarding of the World Cup to Qatar in 2010, with summer temperatures in the Gulf emirate reaching the upper-40s Celsius.
The idea of switching the World Cup to cooler winter months does not sit comfortably with all officials of Europe’s big leagues.

Gas-rich Qatar has also come under the spotlight over foreign workers’ rights as well as accusations that corruption played a part in winning the right to host the World Cup.
Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper has alleged that former Qatari football boss Mohamed Bin Hammam paid more than $US5 million ($5.6 million) to gain support for the emirate ahead of the vote.
Qatar has strongly denied the allegations.
FIFA’s ethic committee is to announce in early 2015 the results of its investigation into the attribution of not only the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, but also the 2018 edition to Russia.

FIFA ethics report slams Australia’s dubious 2022 World Cup bid tactics

And Football Federation Australia (FFA) was “well aware of the ramifications” of the bid team’s conduct, a report by the ethics committee of world governing body FIFA says.

The summary by Judge Joachim Eckert, released in Paris on Thursday night (AEDT), found “potentially problematic facts and circumstances” in Australia’s bid — but ruled they didn’t affect the integrity of the vote.

FIFA staged a 2010 vote and awarded the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar.

Australia initially intended to bid for the 2018 Cup also, but withdrew to focus its efforts on the 2022 event.

Australia spent almost $46 million on a bid to host the 2022 World Cup but received just one vote.

The FFA said it would contact the committee about the “next steps in the process” and review the report’s findings before further commenting.

Meanwhile, the role and relevance of an Australian whistleblower who “was willing to disclose sensitive information to investigators” was also called into question.

The person’s evidence was described as “unreliable”.

The report read: “In May 2013, a source suggested that the Investigatory Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee contact a former senior member of the Australia 2022 bid team who would be willing to disclose specifically relevant and sensitive information to the investigators.

“The Investigatory Chamber subsequently interviewed the relevant individual twice, in New

York in November 2013 and in Australia in April 2014. At all times during the investigation process, the relevant individual was responsive to investigators’ requests for information and documentation. It also offered investigators direct access to its computer to obtain emails dating from its time on the bid team.”

“While the relevant individual provided some useful information regarding possible issues for the Investigatory Chamber to examine, the evidence often did not support its specific recollections and allegations.

“The relevant individual further undermined its own reliability by speaking with the press about its communications with the Investigatory Chamber, despite having agreed to refrain from doing so to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
“Given these circumstances, the Investigatory Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee has not relied on any statement, document, or other information provided by the relevant individual in reaching any conclusions or findings in the Report.

“However, where documents provided by the relevant individual were also obtained through reliable channels, those documents were considered.”

The ethics committee found “a prima facie case” that two consultants to Australia’s bid violated bidding and ethics rules. The report identified connections between financial and other support for supposed “football development” and the bidding process.

“The Report concludes that the Australia 2022 bid team did undertake specific efforts to gain the support of a particular then FIFA Executive Committee member and it suggests that there have been efforts to conceal certain key relationships in this context.

“Certain devices employed by the bid team and its consultants were seemingly aimed at hiding

ties with individuals close to the Executive Committee member concerned while taking advantage of their influence over the member to further the bid strategy.

“According to the Report, there is a prima facie case that two consultants violated the bidding and ethics rules that the bid team represented would bind its consultants. However, given the bid

team’s omission of specific language binding its consultants to FIFA statutes and regulations, the Investigatory Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee considers itself limited in what action it can take.

“According to the Report, there have been communications between one particular consultant of the Australia 2022 bid team that show that the relevant consultant executed his strategy of using his purported relationship with high-ranking FIFA officials to create the appearance that he was influencing the bidding process.”

The ethics committee also said the FFA made “certain payments” to the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).

“Moreover, the Report identified certain payments from the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) to CONCACAF which, according to the Report, appear to have been

comingled, at least in part, with personal funds of the then CONCACAF President who at the time also was a FIFA Executive Committee member,” the report said.

The report also identified connections between financial and other support for “football development” and the bidding process.

These included the Oceania Football Confederation seeking financial support from Australia during the bid period.

They also found Australia’s 2022 bid team attempted to divert funds the federal government had set aside for existing development projects in Africa “towards initiatives in countries with ties to FIFA executive committee members with the intention to advance its bid to host”.

According to the report, “the FFA was well aware of the ramifications such a pattern of conduct might imply”.

“Finally, according to the Report, the Australia 2022 bid team appears to have reached the conclusion to provide financial support under the title ‘(football) development projects’ preferably in areas home to FIFA Executive Committee members.” the report read.

“According to the findings contained in the Report regarding the Australia 2022 bid, there are certain indications of potentially problematic conduct of specific individuals in the light of relevant FIFA Ethics rules.”

The whole situation is just ridiculous...

It's so obviously corrupt that you would roll your eyes if this came up in a movie.

Just stepping back from all this enquiry bullshit... And looking at the bare facts...

The biggest sporting event in the world was granted to a country smaller than Sydney... With less people than Sydney....

It's like that US Senator who got snapped sending dick pics to random woman on his phone... His name was Weiner...

Honestly... If you saw that in a movie you would laugh your ass off at how stupidly unrealistic that is.

We were f*cked as soon as Gillard's melon popped up in that video

It's good to know that FIFA don't think that FIFA are corrupt though

Such a shit video though! How did they expect their ambitious bid to be taken seriously with a video like that? Australia's moved past the stage where we need cartoon kangaroos to market ourselves

This just gets better

Fifa report 'erroneous', says lawyer who investigated corruption claims

Fifa's report into allegations of corruption during the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups has been questioned - by the man who investigated claims of wrongdoing.
Michael Garcia, who conducted a two-year inquiry, said the report "contains numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations".
The report cleared World Cup hosts Russia and Qatar of wrongdoing.
It also accused the English Football Association of flouting bid rules.
But Garcia's statement, issued less than four hours after the report was published, has reopened the debate about the validity of the bidding process for both the 2018 and 2022 competitions.

World Cup bid: Simon Johnson, who led England's bid, denies Fifa claims
Simon Johnson, who led England's 2018 bid team, described the twist in the saga as "farcical".
Speaking to BBC sports editor Dan Roan, he added: "Before that statement by Mr Garcia, I was saying that it's very difficult to have confidence in the conclusions of Mr Eckert's report and that it looked like a politically motivated whitewash.

"Now that I have seen Mr Garcia's statement, I am absolutely convinced that the report is a politically motivated whitewash."
Garcia's statement will embarrass Fifa and raise concerns about the work of Hans-Joachim Eckert.
Fifa's independent ethics adjudicator was responsible for drawing up the report that was published by Fifa at 0900 GMT on Thursday.
Eckert based his findings on the work of Garcia, who had been appointed by Fifa to conduct an independent investigation into claims of corruption

According to ABC news this morning, the American Lawyer who carried out the 2 year investigation is now considering taking action against FIFA for "misrepresenting his report on corruption"

He is alleging that their media release and subsequent report is not what was contained in his report to FIFA.

LOL

You can't make this stuff up, the cover up is almost as bad as the original corruption.

Given the millions in petrodollars that the Qatari government 'donated', a cover up is not surprising.

Great news. I'm glad they didn't give the World Cup to Australia with their dirty tactics. They gave the WC to easily the best bid which was from Qatar. This way we can play in sweltering heat, have none of those pesky homosexuals or jews attend. Drinking during the tournament? No thanks! Also cheaply made stadiums by builders who are literally dying to have a chance to be part of the building of the World Cup stadiums!

Can't fault their commitment. Based on their industrial efforts, no other country deserves it ahead of Qatar.

Pan Euro breakaway league remains UeFa's biggest worry apparently. All the big clubs have the $$$ and a massive sponsor on board ready to go last I read on another forum. Would certainly change the way football is structured in Europe.

Super league on another level .

Ex-English football chief David Bernstein calls on UEFA to boycott FIFA World Cup

Updated about 8 hours agoMon 17 Nov 2014, 11:12pm

The former chairman of England's Football Association (FA) has urged the organisation to lobby UEFA to organise a European boycott of the next World Cup unless FIFA reforms itself.

David Bernstein, who was FA chairman between 2011 and 2013, is the latest senior figure to call for united and dramatic European action following the controversy surrounding FIFA's report into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

In an interview with the BBC, Bernstein also criticised FIFA for being a "totalitarian" set-up and said choosing Qatar as 2022 hosts was "one of the most ludicrous decisions in the history of sport ... an Alice in Wonderland sort of decision".

Won't happen. Not while large parts of UEFA are just as corrupt. Russia won't vote to leave and the Spain bid wasn't even included in the summary report.

The Dutch, then English and the Germans are all desperate to see Blatter go. Platini (who also voted for Qatar) is too worried about destroying his chance to take the FIFA job to cause too much unrest.

Can't believe that this Michel Platini is also a guy that's considered as one of the greatest players of all time...
