The Bears

I never said that fans of a culled or relocated team will jump on the bandwagon of another team, although I wouldn't rule out some of them doing it. @The Great Dane was a Bears fan.

Isn't there a Magpies fan on here who became a South Sydney fan after the Wests and Balmain merger?
I was a Bears fan here in New Zealand in the early 1990s, up until the Warriors joined the NRL in 1995 - then I switched allegiance to the NZ-based club.

The colours, the mascot, and the "lovable losers" hard-luck history of the Bears all appealed when I was originally choosing a club to cheer for in the early 90s.. but the chance to follow a club from my country appealed to me far more when the opportunity came.

I still have a soft spot for the Bears in NSW Cup, but I accept that the business case for them coming back to the NRL is a long shot, especially when we have huge potential expansion markets away from the oversaturated Sydney scene.

Yes but having those brands survive, albeit in another city, has resulted in a large number of Melbourne people supporting both the Swans and Lions and not being in a position of having to pick another club to support. That given how many games the Swans/Lions play in Melbourne every week really works.
Another good case for the bears in another region that isn't NSW

How much money do the North Sydney Bears have?

If they're loaded and use their wealth as security then they could be a genuine option. But they need to provide something special that no other bid can offer. It would be stupid and insulting to give them a licence for no other reason than they're a cockroach club.

Supporters of the Bears bid would say they have tradition & heritage, but placed against (say) South Sydney (who used the heritage argument to great effect in the early 2000s), it's not a history steeped in premiership triumph.

Their history and tradition means something to Bears fans, but it's worthless to anyone who doesn't have an emotional connection to the club.

Not poor but not making massive profit either, the LC makes less than $1million a year, on a good year, surplus. They have a lot of asset ($106mill) tied up in their properties but that’s not much use unless you sell it. They are also carrying $21million debt from loans.

Best they stay in the NSW Cup.

Pirates and NZ 2 should be the next team. No more NSW teams.

Here is an article from Ian Heads regarding the damage done by SL:

On this day 25 years ago, colleague Ian Heads wrote a sobering piece in the Sun Herald about the impact of the Super League War.
Merchandising was down between 60 and 90 per cent, driving some businesses broke. (Interestingly, merch from this period is now among the most sought-after).
Corporate sponsorship was down 40 per cent. Sponsors lost included Canberra Milk, Penfolds, Cash Converters, Prospect Electricity and Reebok.
Crowds were down 35 to 40 per cent.
Books and magazines selling between 35 and 40 per cent less.
Television ratings had dropped off 20 per cent, killing the Sunday night replay and prompting the move to Monday Night Football
As I was highlighting

People in Sydney liked their sports, they had their RL team in the community, you will find they also followed a AFL team, north & east side had a RU team, we followed the Socceroos and national cricket

People walked away with their feet and their cash

As as been shown, you kill off a club you give opposition sports a leg up

People in Adelaide and Perth have zero RL clubs to support, so they grow up watching fumbleball. Kids in Sydney grow up with nine clubs to support and aspire to play for when they grow up.
Horse shit.
Perth Dred supports the Storm.
You are able to support a team from anywhere.
I get it now why most on here think you are a dumb f**k, you truly are.

Tbf that’s because I was already a rl fan for 20 years when I moved here and didnt want to switch codes. If I had been born in perth the chance of me being a nrl fan would be very slim but maybe with a team here I might have got as addicted as I did growing up in Hull.

You can support a team from anywhere, true.. but if your city has NO team in the top tier in one code, then there's little to no opportunity to be an active fan (going to games), and born & bred people in that city will be more likely to gravitate towards sports they CAN attend at the top level.

It's not a hard concept to understand.

You’re confusing what happened 20 odd years ago to what should happen now and in the future. Again it was sad what happened but that doesn’t mean putting a team in an area where you already have nine sides is preferable to having a team in an area where there are no other sides.

Perth Red is originally from England.

I support the Cowboys.

I've probably sunk more money into the Cowboys via memberships, merchandise and attending games than you do with your club.

Is my memory playing tricks, but didn't the Bears offer to move lock, stock and barrel to the CC and get knocked back? or was they offered the CC and turned it down?

I am not confusing anything

The community of northern Sydney to the CC and exclude Manly from this due to the physical barriers

Is not serviced by RL

The number of people serviced, juniors and corporate $ is bigger than every other bid
