Ellery Hanley was as a good as any Australian or New Zealander running around in his era. Hanley was well ahead of his time. He had size, speed and a one of the best fends of all-time.

I could find a place for him in my All-time team and if the recent lists detailing the greatest ever players allowed for foreign stars, he would be included without question.

Ask an old Balmain Tigers fan how good this guy was.

Superstar.

We saw ellery outside the ground in Huddersfield a couple of year's back
The man is still a complete axe ... his handshake could pulverise gold bullion
An absolute legend

would you say that Ellery Hanley was better than Martin Offiah?

Also, as you know, the best 30 players of the last 30 years in the Australian Rugby League competition (1978-2008) was released not so long ago. I know Hanley did play a bit in Australia, but if he did play his whole career in Australia, where abouts do you think he'd rank in the top 30 list?

I wonder if Terry Lamb's hit today would prompt a flurry of letters to the NRL from parents threatening to ban their kids from playing rugby league? Jeez it was ordinary...

Slightly off topic, I noticed that in an article regarding the Larry Corowa cup between WT and the Coast the journalist noted that Corowa was affectionately known as the 'Flash.' It was always the 'black flash'. I wonder whether it was just an oversight or changed for PC reasons? Maybe Ellery will join Renouf as simply the Pearl...

Easily.

Don't get me wrong, Martin Offiah was a great, great winger, one of the best finishers that has ever played the game though he wasn't near the player of Hanley who could play lock, five-eight or centre and dominate a football game.

I mean, it's like asking was Eric Grothe better than Sterling or Kenny? Grothe was a great, great winger though you wouldn't put him ahead of either of his peers despite his credentials.

Hanley played most of his career in the UK (Bradford, Wigan, Leeds) though had stints over here with Balmain and Wests (he played with the Tigers in 88 as well as later in 96 or 97. His last stint not as successful as his two season in the late 80's).

I don't know where he sits in the Top 30 list, though I know I would be able to make a case for him to be included.
