I've just chatted to my mate OVP on the mobile. He's down at the Clovelly Hotel watching Sky and I'm up here on the coast, and we both agree that Brett Finch - the NRL's greatest talent and 2007 eels halfback, is worthy of our constant praise. I mean, he owned test captain Lockyer tonight, with less preparation than 2 minute noodles.
OVP especially makes the point that Politis should sign Finch to a 5 year contract, and if Finch leaves for the vastly inferior Soward's gametime at the Roosters, OVP will leave as well. In fact, OPV has been in Gallop's ear about giving Finch a go on the NRL board, mainly because of his verbal eloquence, but also because the NRL board could use a former Test captain when Tallis finally gets carted off to that facility with the soft walls.
Personally, I reckon we should let Finchy savour the moment. He'll have he added pressure of test captaincy in October, and then next season explaining to Hagan what a real halfback can do, because of the lesser halfbacks that Hagan has coached in his career. Plus there's the Eels male modelling assignment's he'll pick up with Mark Ridell and Mick Vella.
OVP was also mentioning to me that he is going to push for Gallop to make him Immortal No. 8, but I reckon we should wait untill he's at least held up the World Cup next season.
Either way, I know that I have been wrong about Finch, and this week OVP has set me straight. I'm glad he did - I'd look like a right fool if I'd had put dispariging remarks on my banner about Finch, instead of lesser players, eg Lockyer, Johns, Fittler et al. I should have listened to OVP's constant praise re Finch and his abundant talents long ago. After all, I know he's right!
