The core of our future

Over the last week i've been reading a few posts here and there about our future, not a lot of it has been enjoyable reading. A few people have questioned Sheens tactics and more so than ever now his buying policy. However one thing he has said over his time at the club is how good the young talent here is and he's proven this to be so.

A few people on here have shown there doubts over the clubs chances of holding onto Benji Marshall in the future, asking why would Benji want to stay when he can go to a more sucessful club? That might be a valied question but its one we dont need to face yet, he's about to have his latest contract upgraded .

Anyways we might ask ourself how we're going to be sucessfull and hold onto the likes of Benji, its simple really, with a bit of luck helping us, it so important that assuming players develop into first graders that we build a side around.

1.Greally

3.Halatau
4.Collis

6.Marshall

8.Gibbs
9.Farah
10.Lima
11.Fulton
13.Harrison

If we can hold onto the best of this group sucess may already be in our own backyard and all we might have to do is let it take its course.

we wont hold them all, i think thats' going to be tough. If we keep 6 -7 of those 9 we will've done well.

I agree with your post and we should build a side around most of the players above. Of course though there are the odd exception. I mean Hodgson is only 26 or so , theres still alot of footy in him - so Greally is not gonna be there for a while at best, unless he or Hodgson decides to rotate position.

Also I think some people should remember Todd Payten is only 24 or so and has a lot of game time left.

Yeah they are, they've done well to hold onto the right guys, Still they've had to let guys like Sattler and Whatuira go to hold onto them. Their management has done great in that sense, hopefully our management will make the right calls too. Sacrifices will be made we just have to hope we make the right calls, like penrith have.

True and next season Whatuira will only be 23-24 as well. Greally can also be used on the wing, he's got pace and great footwork so assuming Hodgson is still holding him back Simon would ceretainly be a candidate for the wing.

payten has been around for ages you foeget he is only young, as we know front rowers get better with age, if we can keep him here for a few years i think he will turn into a better forward,

Exactly guys.....it just goes to show the picture painted in here is far rosier than sometimes we think it is, With all the young guys around patience can be hard, i can remember a lot of games this year where an inexperienced player has cost us dearly, they're learning though.

Marshall and Prince should be our halves for a long time still.

prince will go back to qld after his contract expires with the tigers.

In any team sport, if you keep the core of that side together your gonna do well, Manchester united is a good example Beckham, Scholes, the nevilles and Giggs, that was once a core of talented youngsters, now look what they turned into (apart from turning into a bunch of english chokers).

Just out of curiosity what does everyone expect from these young guys?

To be average first graders?
solid first graders?
Good first graders?
top class first graders?
Anything higher...?

For me right now, not a lot, they are not expereinced enough or developed enough to win games for us on a consistant level, thats why we see them in and out of the 17 so often. As long as they get involved and show some initiative, im happy, after all like i said they're not there to lead the side.

I expect Marshall to score 125 tries next year, and for Harrison to captain the Tigers and NZ next year. Not alot really.

From what i've seen in lower grades and the top grade I believe/hope we will get at least a couple of reps out of our current crop.

1. Greally --- Hodgo will be around for a while yet. Might pose some problems.

2.
3. Harrison --- Dont rate him as a second rower, plus we have plenty of other to play 2nd row. Oh and Halatau cannot tackle.
4. Collis --- Must play outside Liam and Isaac.
5.

6. Fulton
7. Marshall

8. Gibbs --- So young for a prop. Gunna be a good player.
9. Farah --- Gives the all important direction we lack.
10.

11. Halatau --- Got doubts over this one.
12.
13. De Gois --- Hopefully Sheens doesn't screw him over.

Roberts is another one that could be good.

Wingers look a little dubious. The two Shannon's are contenders and Rocky Trimarchi could probably end up on the wing if needs be.

While hard running second rowers and props havn't really shown up yet, they definately will in a few years. With players like Pritchard, Hammer, Sweeny etc playing well in Flegg they should progress well.

Oh, and I still have doubts as to whether Marshall will ever live up to it all.
