Hird is a man. He is the man you would want to lead you in a charge out of the trenches at the Somme. The charge may well be hopeless and futile. But the option to run away is worse, and will lead to shame and execution just the same. Yet this is what the anonymous keyboard warriors in here are insisting that Hird should do. Run away and leave his troops to face inevitable annihilation on their own. But Hird is a man, not a cowardly keyboard warrior. Those who take glee and personal satisfaction from the downfall of the great are not men. They are gloaters and weasels, back stabbers and fair weather friends and fans.

Hird is a footballing genius. He has overcame injuries that would have ended the career of lesser men. His courage and determination are legendary. His injuries were so chronic and crippling a lesser man would have given up. But he didn’t, instead he sought out radical treatments to do what the traditional methods had failed to do. In this is perhaps the genesis of Hirds belief that unusual treatments can benefit players. It is a belief that was perhaps distorted by Hird’s life experience, but that does not mean it wasn’t genuinely held.

There is not a scintilla of evidence that Hird expected these treatments to be anything but within the rules and regulations. Radical yes, but illegal no. There is no way Hird could have suspected the sports scientist entrusted to supply these treatments would not be totally professional and highly acknowledgeable of the codes and regulations. Indeed the sports scientist had a considerable reputation and years of experience from work at another prominent club, albeit in a different football code. The sports scientist had even been previously investigated over his methods and given the all clear. He must have known exactly what he was doing and how to approach but not cross the boundaries of legality. Yet, something went horribly wrong, if the reports and innuendo are to be believed.

Hird is a man. He knows he holds a lot of the responsibility for what has transpired. That is why he refuses to run away like a coward. However those around him also must share in the blame. Clearly they could have done more to throw light on Hird’s blinkered view of the world. But clearly given the seriousness of the situation they did not do enough. They should have left no stone unturned in their efforts to bring the dangers of the situation to light. Hird knows that if he can win this war, then his team will win too. That is why he is so determined to fight on. He is, as this superb article correctly points out, selfless. A pity there aren’t more like him.

http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/writ-claims-league-has-acted-in-bad-faith-20130822-2sekt.html

James Hird's writ against the AFL and Demetriou is exposing a lot of lies, like Demetriou and McLachlan tipping off Essendon prior to the press conference Feb 7. The fact they denied it for months only serves to prove how high the corruption goes.

It's QC's at ten paces. They'll end up taking each other down.

It's going to be very interesting see this played out.

Chook.

Except of course that the two individuals alleged to have taken part in the tip off conversation deny it ever happened.

But don't let the truth get in the way of a good story, we'll just believe the 100% word of Cult leader Jimmy.

So how exactly did the ElephantJuiceters know of the impending announcement into their doping clinic?

Or do you believe they didn't know and it was just a coincidence that they happened to "self-report" before the investigation was announced?

They self reported because Fairfax were about to out them? Would help to do ones homework. How Fairfax were onto it? Who knows, all parties, the AFL, ASADA & Drug Cheat FC have all been leaking like a siv all year, so it could have come to Fairfax from anywhere.

Vlad may have done with Cult leader Jimmy asserts, but to suggest that taking the shrill cries of a piece of human filth that used his cult leader status to convince young men to become scientific guinea pigs as gospel is a bit rich.

At the end of the day, the only person suggesting the AFL leaked to Essendon is this scum. You'd want more stronger evidence before suggesting this "proves AFL corruption"

That's been known since day 1?

Look I don't really care if Vlad did make the call, if he did so be it if it comes out in the wash, he'll cop the rightful slap he would deserve.

On a RL site, what most are concerned about is Vlad and the AFL being taken down a notch.

For me, the concern down here is that Hird is trying to use this sort of thing to garner sympathy and minimise the penalty that is coming his way.

No one, in any sport in this country can be allowed to subject their players to what Hird and his team inflicted upon the Essendon players. His penalty needs to be as harsh as possible, and I just hope shit like this doesn't muddy the water (If untrue)

No, what everyone knew from day 1 is, regardless of whatever buffers he used, it was Vlad's will being done when Essendon were tipped and "self-reported". It's not a case of believing Hird, it's just a case of him confirming and detailing what everyone already knew. And yeah, we noticed you guys don't care down there about silly things like the integrity of the leader of your game.

AFL's behind-the-scenes tactics in Essendon punishment talks exposed
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...nt-talks-exposed/story-fni5f6kv-1226774538768

EXCLUSIVE: SECRET documents and a bombshell email have lifted the lid on behind-the-scenes inducements offered to Essendon and James Hird as the AFL worked frantically to pressure him to accept ElephantJuice scandal penalties.

The Herald Sun can reveal that days before the August 26-27 AFL Commission hearing was due to consider penalties, deals were being proposed by Australia's top government-appointed sports official, John Wylie.

A document emailed by Wylie to Essendon chairman Paul Little on the night of August 23 outlined potential settlement terms as the crisis threatened to spill into the Supreme Court.

Wylie, the Australian Sports Commission chairman, suggests: "Hird as senior coach takes responsibility for the inadequate governance and oversight within the club's football department that gave rise to this situation.

"It is however acknowledged …. to the best of the AFL's knowledge and belief, Hird did not promote or encourage an unethical environment within the club; Hird has not brought the game into disrepute.

"In the totality of the circumstances, the AFL will impose, and Hird will accept, a 12-month suspension from all coaching duties."

In a separate document presented to Hird on August 23, amid negotiations between Wylie and Little, the Essendon coach is offered "an outstanding career development opportunity" in return for dropping his legal action against the AFL.

Offers of "no player sanctions'' and "no double jeopardy'' despite an ASADA investigation are discussed.

Wylie said last night: "I was requested by both Paul Little and (AFL Commission chairman) Mike Fitzpatrick, in the first instance by Paul, to assist in communications between the AFL and Essendon at a time when *direct communication between them was difficult."

League spokesman James Tonkin said last night: "Numerous discussions took place at different levels in a bid to resolve the matter as quickly and appropriately as possible."

An offer to allow Hird to receive a full salary while serving a 12-month ban was also *discussed.

The document presented to the Essendon coach reads: "Charge of bringing game into disrepute dropped. 12 months suspension starting now.''

It states Hird could also keep his place in the AFL Hall of Fame and be "acknowledged by the AFL as a legend of the game".

In exchange for the offers, the document says Hird therefore "withdraws all legal action immediately'' .

A string of revelations to be published in the Herald Sun and The Australian over the coming days raises major perception issues surrounding the integrity and the outcome of both the ElephantJuice probe and the AFL Commission hearing.

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou said on August 7: ``To suggest the AFL Commission and the people on the commission would somehow predetermine an outcome is offensive and just plain wrong.''

Essendon chairman Paul Little says outgoing coach James Hird accepted the penalties for the good of the club.
It is not known if all AFL commissioners were aware of Wylie's involvement or of proposed inducements at the time they were asked to sign off on the final resolution against *Essendon and its four officials on August 27.

Little last night confirmed the talks with Wylie. He said: ``John Wylie is a longstanding personal friend and we discussed possible strategies for settling the dispute.''

Hird is understood to have rebuffed the inducements put on the table on August 23, only to accept a 12-month suspension four days later under fierce pressure and fearing that he would be banished from the game and his club.

There were also discussions about sending Hird to Oxford University in England, where both Wylie and Fitzpatrick are Rhodes scholars.

Hird later independently applied to attend the exclusive Fontainebleau business school in France, passing an entrance exam in Singapore. He has just returned from his $120,000 MBA studies.

Sources have questioned why Wylie as chairman of the Sports Commission - which works with the Australian Sports and Anti-Doping Authority to fight drug cheating and which promotes integrity in sport - was drafted into pre-hearing bartering with the approval of AFL Commission chairman Fitzpatrick.

Proposed penalties for Mark Thompson, Bruce Reid and Danny Corcoran are also stated in correspondence, with Thompson cleared to coach again in 2014.

A club fine of $1.5 million and the deduction of 12 premiership points "so as to miss the finals" are also documented. The club was ultimately fined $2 million and relegated to ninth on the AFL ladder.

Hird and Fitzpatrick did not return questions from the Herald Sun.

Oh dear Vladdy, what have you done now? Lying again.

Mike Fitzpatrick tenure as chairman of the AFL is untenable.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-12-04/afl-tried-to-induce-hird-bombers-report/5133040?section=sport

The AFL tried to induce Essendon and James Hird to accept ElephantJuice scandal penalties days before the AFL Commission hearing, according to a News Corp report.

Documents and an email, obtained by News Corp, reportedly show deals were struck between government sports official John Wylie and the football club before the August 26 hearing in the wake of the Bombers supplements scandal.

Australian Sports Commission chairman Wylie had been engaged by AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick and Essendon chairman Paul Little as an arbitrator in the negotiations that led to eventual sanctions imposed against Essendon.

Fitzpatrick as chairman and ultimately judge in this case was arranging back room deals with the accused in what can only be described as a face saving deal for the AFL.

The corruption in this case goes right to the very top of the AFL commission. Heads must roll.

The sooner the Anglo-Irish game is eradicated from the Australian sporting landscape the better.
This embarrassment to Australia with its origins in England and Ireland has no place in modern Australia. It's Australian in origin as pasta. It was first played in this country by English and Irish gold miners, not Australians. It has the morals of an alley cat.
It should be consigned to the trash can where it belongs.

So pasta should be consigned to the trash can as well?

There is a place in Australian sport for both AFL and league, the latter of which is a true sporting import, like most other sports to this country. Cricket is an import from Britain but I for one don't want it banned, especially given we are 2 - 0 up now and hopefully about to claim the Ashes.

Who's worse - Vlad or Sepp Blatter?

No one is worse than Sepp, FIFA is by far the most corrupt sporting body ever, it still doesn't have any form of anti-corruption body in 2013, it's just hilarious.

Vlad is very very lucky the media down there is a soft touch compared to Sydney's towards the NRL administrators, he would have been run out of town a long long time ago.

The media aren't a soft touch, they are controlled by Vlad's mob.

If they write negative articles on the AFL they are simply blocked from media releases and press conferences.

He's not called Vlad for nothing, you wont see too much written about this in the Melbourne media, however its open slather for the Sydney journos.

AF is a fusion of 2 games Gaelic football and Rugby. Its English and Irish in origin. To say its Australia's game is just dumb.

There is alot of early info that says it was an Aussie sport developed by Victorian cricketers to keep them fit in Winter. They just started kicking the ball backwards and forwards and it developed from there.

I've never heard of the Anglo origins before.
