While the Cure were a great band, they don't hold a candle to the Smiths. Morrissey has a golden voice with so much range from roaring punk (particularly in his live performances) to the the falsetto styles of the the BeeGees and the great Roy Orbison. Johnny Marr was the true guitar anti-hero. He is renowned as one of the greatest guitarists on the planet, by those in the know, but he did not need to wallow in self-indulgent guitar solos, or extravagant intros. Morrissey's poetic self deprecating humour struck such a heavy chord with many, and a cursory glance at the lyrical content may convey depression and dark moods, but there was so much more when put into perspective. In fact there is a great deal of positivity to be chanelled from their music. This is not to say they didn't go balls out to depress, as they did on many occasion, but it was more about connecting with the audience, often by their shortcomings and inadequacies. Morrissey's lyrics dealt with all sorts of aspects of life, from sexual frustration, shyness and self-loathing, things many other artists were too scared to attempt, and if they did they could not carry it off without sounding corny or fake.

The real success of the Smiths in my opinion, is the combination of Morrissey's lyrics with Marr's ability to construct robust melodies that fit the tone of the music so well. They were definitely one of the most original bands on the planet and their influence is still felt all these years after they parted.

I regard the Smiths up there with the Beatles, the Stones and Bowie for their influence on modern music.

The Cure were an excellent band as well but they are just not in the same league as far as I'm concerned.

I voted for the cure.

Standing on the beach was one of the first "tapes" I got when I left school and got a license.
So although a lot of the music was depressing it reminds me of those days.
"10:15 on a saturday night ,
and the tap drips under the street light
I'm sitting in the kitchen sink
and the tap drips
drip drip drip drip etc"

words are probably wrong...

Ah yes dressing in all black and meandering around the city in winter.

I never even considered it.

I was a confused young man drifting between punk and pink floyd.

I always liked "In between days" and Killing an Arab"

'Paint a vulgar picture', is the song I think you are referring to, off the 'Strangeways Here We Come' album.

Lyrics by Stephen Morrissey
Music by Johnny Marr

At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
And oh, the plans they weave
And oh, the sickening greed

At the record company party
On their hands - a dead star
The sycophantic bags all say :
"I knew him first, and I knew him well"

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

A-list, playlist
"Please them , please them !"
"Please them !"
(sadly, THIS was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have said no
If you'd wanted to

BPI, MTV, BBC
"Please them ! Please them !"
(sadly this was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have walked away
...Couldn't you ?

I touched you at the soundcheck
You had no real way of knowing
In my heart I begged "Take me with you ...
I don't care where you're going..."

But to you I was faceless
I was fawning, I was boring
Just a child from those ugly new houses
Who could never begin to know

Who could never really know
Oh ...

Best of ! Most of !
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves !
Buy both, and feel deceived

Climber - new entry, re-entry
World tour ! ("media whore")
"Please the Press in Belgium !"
(THIS was your life...)

And when it fails to recoup ?
Well, maybe :
You just haven't earned it yet, baby

I walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck
You're just the same as I am
What makes most people feel happy
Leads us headlong into harm

So, in my bedroom in those 'ugly new houses'
I danced my legs down to the knees
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again ...

At the record company meeting
On their hands - at last ! - a dead star !
But they can never taint you in my eyes
No, they can never touch you now

No, they cannot hurt you, my darling
They cannot touch you now
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again

It's disappointing that the release of some many best ofs had made Paint a Vulgar Picture a bit of a joke.

I like the Cure, but they do not come near the Smiths.
The Smiths were only together for five years and released four albums, as well as four compilations.
Probably the best band of the 80s.
