The Eels shouldn't be in the grand final

There are many pro's and con's in relation to the regular season. Why is it 26 rounds and not 20 or 30 rounds. Why dont all teams play each other twice.
Why do some teams play Melbourne and Bulldogs twice, while other teams play them once.

You cant please everyone. At the end of the day, the eels and Melbourne are in the GF.
If the regular season was say, 32 rounds, whose to say, a team like parra, couldn't of finished first.

Sour grapes if you ask me.

Right argument, poor timing. I'm also of the belief that for a 16 team competition, it should only be a top 5. However, the time for such articles is either in the pre-season or start of the year. Not grand final week.

Just ask Media Watch what they think of the Mercury.
Worst print in the country.

Suity

I challenge that. I lived in Wollongong and yes the Mercury is rubbish (apart from the form guide) but I'll bring down a copy of the Cairns Post!! Headline "Man gets hit on head by coconut!" Freaking ridiculous. They have been calling the dust storms "another Chynobal"!

But on the Mcintyre system it's funny that the System is stupid most years because the bottom teams always fall out anyway, now you have a team that beats the odds and it is still rubbish

And this concept that a team that got on a roll late doesn't deserve to be there... ok but a team that lost what 5 of it's last 6 (the Dragons) does?!

I suggest using the Mercury to wipe away those tears Mr Mercury writer...

One wonders if this artical would have been posted if it was the Dragons, that made a late charge and finished 8th. While I think it should only be a top 5 or 6, this is the system in place as it has been for many years, so tough luck.

Maybe the whole finals system should be given the flick and whoever win the minor premiership, takes all.

I also laugh about all this talk of a Dragons being most consistant during the season and losing out to a team that has hit form towards the end.

Well if the Dragons had been the most consistant during the whole season, and not up until the final 6 weeks where they won 1 game and lost 5 (is that being the most consistant all year?). Then they would have been in the grand final.

I am not saying the system is right, but our team has hit it's form at the right time and not run out of puff near the finish line.

here i think you dropped these
this article is so pathetic i can't believe it ever saw print talk about sour grapes

p.s. even if the dragons beat the eels they would have been easy meat for the bulldogs so you wouldnt be in the grand final anyway!

The truth is that not much separated team 9 from 5 this year. Reality is that with the Cap evening out the teams, as its designed to do, there is not going to be this massive gap between the teams 1 to 12.
Im all for a top 8.... i dont believe it breeds mediocrity at all.

dickhead @ the highest level!!think of the top 8 as a wild card!!injuries and poor form keeps you on the outer!!but if you are good enough and well coached you deserve to be there. You have to beat the best to be up against the best, and thats what the final 8 system provides!!!

i think he wants to scrap the finals altogether and just hand the trophy to the dragons every year

The writer makes points that are valid i suppose but the top 8 is what we have and the Eels have done fantastically well to be in the GF from where they were not that long ago.. Taking credit from them is nothing but sour grapes in my opinion.

Although i am a Saints fan i will be there Sunday and quietly cheering for Parra after what they have achieved to get to the GF.

I agree that we don't deserve to be in the Grand Final. But if we win on Sunday I won't consider us anything less than worthy premiers.

We don't make the rules - we just have to play by them.

Despite this magical run I would still favour a reduction in the number of teams making the finals, whether it be to 7, 6 or ultimately 5.

It would have been an even more amazing achievement to make the Grand Final if we had to finish fifth to stay alive. That was still a possibility going into the final round. As it stands we were able to lose out last game and still make it.
