The End of Kat?

Katich has an Achilles tear and is goneski for the summer. I've always been a been a big fan of Kat, but surely that must be the end of his career. I know how tough and determined he is, but at 35 surely now the selectors must look to the future and put Hughes in with the clear message that it's your spot now so just relax and play cricket.

Sad way to end, but sorry Kat that's stumps mate.

It pains me to say it because he's far and away my favourite player.

But yes, I think that's Kats final dig.

That really sucks, fitting that he went out fighting even refusing a runner.

10 tons and 25 50's in 56 tests. Well done Kat.

If it is the end for Kat sad way for the last real tough gritty bloke of Aussie cricket, Hughes should be in and told to make the position his own. He could be a 10 yr plus player for Australia.

Useless batsmen couldn't even given him the send off he deserved after risking his career by batting.

Massive fan of the Kat. Will be a massive shame for him if he is cut down by injury.

Should have played more Test Cricket but was made scapegoat back in 2005

He's a pretty fit guy, it may not be the end, but if we get some decent openers, he may find it hard to fight his way back in

all depends on how we go I reckon

Fair point Twiz.

If we get absolutely pumped (if, ha!) he may force his way back in to help the next crop over the next few years.

Katich should be allowed to do what Charles Barkley did and return for one test so that his last test isn't one limping off the field.

Maybe if it's against the Bangala's and he's filling in for an injured player for one test, otherwise what is the point of bringing back into the test side a 36 year old opener?

He's not in great form so it may be his last test. With recovery, getting some cricket under his belt again and fighting a youngster, he is pretty hard up against it. Hope he does though. Shows what it means to him

Because he is still our best batsmen?

He has been consistent since coming into the side at opener, but his form has been tailing off. His last three series (Pak, Ind, Eng) have only produced 394 runs @ 33 with a high score of 83.

Very hard to argue he would be our best bat when he finally does come back having been out for many months and unlikely to have played any FC before he returns. And even so, how long do really reckon a 36 year old has left in his legs?

Waugh and Border made it to 38, but they were nothing like their best in their latter years.

After the 2001 Ashes Waugh was nothing like the run machine he had been with poor series against SA (twice) and England and fairly average series' against Pakistan (a 100* and 2 ducks) and India his last series. Only some cheap runs against the minnows held his average up at this time.

Border had a great last Ashes campaign at home and did well against the Kiwis but the South Africans sorted him right out and closed the curtain on a great career.

As good as Kat has been he is no Waugh or Border and the side can't afford to be hanging on to pensioners trying to pretend they're 30 and in there prime. Especially as we are likely to still have Hussey or Ponting or both still in the side.

Kat's injury is a blessing in disguise for the selectors in that they can take the opportunity to move on one of the old men of the side without having to make the hard call. I reckon they'll take it.

Yeah, Achilles injuries do not heal overnight.

To be fair to the Kat he's been playing injured the last four tests (broken thumb in India, shoulder in Brisbane and now Achiles) and one of the innings was run out without facing a ball.

Sad to see, easily my favourite player in the current side, but this is the same kind of injury that finished Hayden off, and would hate to see the Kat struggling like Haydens last tests

Just sad he didnt get more tests when he was in great form, eg getting dropped in Sri Lanka after scoring about 200 runs across two innings on a turning SCG against the Indians

Since being reinstated he's played 33 tests for just under 3000 runs at 50, with 8 centuries and 17 50's, pretty damn good effort that.

Decent way to go out if it is his last, a real fighting knock despite not being able to use his front foot properly
