There is far too much bombing. We need rules to fix that. Make it harder to bomb with immunity. 6-again is better than what we had but there are other options that are way better than 6 again.
the main thing that has contributed to crowds and tv ratings is womens interest due to WNRL and WSOO and also the decline in interest in cricket.

I used to hate trys from kicks, especially bombs. Just boot it in the air and hope for the best. I didn't think it was worth 4 points...but all that has changed! There's now a massive art form to the contest! Absolutely brilliant skill on display from our wingers today and it's adding big time to the highlights reel.
There's now nothing our game doesn't have that AFL does.

One of the greatest rule changes in the modern game was legalizing hitting the corner post in the act of scoring a try.

So long as the ball is grounded in the in-goal & the try scoring player isn't touching the ground out-of-bounds, it deserves a try - no matter what happens to the post.

It's opened the door to marvelous acrobatics.

The funny thing is that the wingers now days are so good that they don't even touch the corner post most of the time when they score those unbelievable tries.

And it was Andrew Voss that advocated for that rule change for years and was very vocal about it.
We can all thank him for that.

Wasn’t that Andrew Voss responsible for that on his show boot n all ?

Penrith have reduced the once mighty Storm to bomb and hope footy. It's fantastic to see.

League is the biggest soap opera sport on the planet. We now have 24/7 coverage of it. Its not just the game, people talk about Buzz and Ready arguing on 360 or what lies Gus told on 100% Footy as much as a Cowboys Dragons game

League shows are Housewives of LA for 30-50 year old blokes

People love those backline moves. The tryline ones are great. But the ones from a long way out, especially from inside own half are the best. I’ve suggested in the past that to encourage more or those we should have American football sideline rules.

Yep, he gets a lot of flack for being eccentric - and even though I'm a fan of his style, I admit he can sometimes be too esoteric for your traditional footy fan.. but his heart is in the right place - and IMO the game needs people who question things that most take for granted.

As Frank Zappa once put it, "Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."

I like Voss.
Always have and still do.
Ginanne and Maroon are the best though.
However, that's for a different thread.

I think all these explanations make sense it’s just crazy how suddenly it all happened. After 20 years of little to no growth suddenly crowds just exploded as have tv ratings and social media presence.

Personally I think the dolphins coming in changed the perception of the game and I think Covid supercharged things. Our game is really well suited to social media which has helped things blow up somewhat.

Still seems crazy how fast it’s happened and I do wonder if it’s likely to continue.
There's a perception of growth again (a correct perception) starting with the Dolphins, and PVL is the driver behind all of it. The game has a leader that talks up the game and drives it forward.

Look at that big beautiful crowd in Melbourne last night! I think it's finally starting to creep into the Melbourne mainstream.
Not to turn this into an AFL bashing thread but watching the game last, I couldn't help but to look at the differences in watching League to AFL. There's so many different reasons to applaud in League. The Melbourne crowd were so in tune with the flow of the game, I'd almost say more than other crowds around the country. The better the tackle, the more important the the tackle.. the bigger the applause! They rode every moment of that contest and seemed to applaud and appreciate all the little things there team were doing.
AFL is exciting but it's all just kicking and catching really, there's not much else. It's either a goal and you clap or it's not.

I have lived in Melbourne for the past 5 years working on tower cranes so I talk to shitloads of blokes every day. In 2020 no one knew what a storm was and i used to cop shit for being a bum sniffer. Now though heaps of blokes support the Storm (and other teams) go to games, watch state of origin and you can have a decent convo/banter about footy. The difference in 5 years is massive, a complete 180.
They all still call it rugby though. And speaking of rugby, who scheduled the wallabies/all black test at the same time as the afl gf?? No wonder they are irrelevant...

Interesting how people like Gus were quoted as saying stuff the AFL.. it's so dumb. Why make them choose? Nobody in Melbourne is going to miss the AFL grand final but those people aren't necessarily exclusive AFL fans.. they're Storm fans and NRL fans too. In a way, it's spiteful to our own fans.
Such a dumb move from Union but certainly not a surprise.

Yeah, it's amazing what can happen when you have a leader who actually loves the game, talks it up, and gets stuff he thinks needs doing, done.

As opposed to the Greenburgs and Gallops of this world who were too busy playing favourites, from clubland to TV deals, to do much other than breed negativity amongst the games own fans, let alone attracting new ones.

Have we ever heard PVL say that he took advice from his daughters touch footy team regarding decisions in a multi billion dollar sport? FFS..
