the Greatest Covers of all time

I was listening to some songs this morning, thinking about which songs came up so much better when they were covered by another artist. For example:

Urge Overkill - Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon (Neil Diamond)
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton)
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince)

What other covers do you rate as being better than the original? I'll add more songs tonight to my list.

If anyone mentions Jessica Simpson (Angels), Britney Spears (I Love Rock N Roll) or Madonna (American Pie), I'll call you a deadset dropkick.

I was just thinking Jessica Sim..err..no I wasnt
I was thinking Britney Sp..uhhh ....
No, Madonna - Amer...ummmm...

I liked U2's cover of Helter Skelter
I hated UB40's cover of Elvis' "I can't help falling in love with you"
and Aaron Carter's "I want candy" makes me laugh...cuz he's thinking lollies.

That Whitney Houston song sounds like a f*cking dog howling.

Covers that I rate the equal of or better than the originals:

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Hey Joe
Marilyn Manson - Suicide is Painless (theme from M*A*S*H)
Type O Negative - Paranoid
Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer - Redemption Song (equal to the original's briliance)
The Revolting Cocks - Do you think I'm Sexy
Metallica - The Small Hours
Anaal Nathrakh - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

you have no appreciation of true talent

whitney houston is one of the the very top artists in the world

if you cant appreciate the talents of whitney is it any wonder you cant appareciate the talent of ANTHONY CALLEA

Whitney is anorther big voiced vocal masturbator like Anthony, who thinks big lungs and vocal tricks are more important that delicacy and restraint in a vocal performance.

Whitney Houston's cover is deadset appalling - someone should have told her that howling loudly does not make a good performance. The best that can be said for it is that it goes well with the dog of a movie it was in.

This thread's been done before, so I'm going to take my post from a previous one and replay it here

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Led Zep
Black Magic Woman - Santana
Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
Love Hurts - Nazareth
Mr Tambourine Man - The Byrds
Respect - Aretha Franklin
Susie Q - Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Letter, With A Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker

And special mention to Metallica - they consistently do better covers than most bands I've seen. They really know how to take a song and make it their own.
