Starsiege : Tribes

Was still awesome even on a 56k modem ... greatest netcode i've ever seen, it even allowed 56kers to compete with HPBs (High Ping Bastards lol).

This game reminded me so much of rugby league ... you got a clan together with people you liked playing with online, and then started playing clan matches in a tournament every Sunday night, or any night for that matter. The game kept growing because of the gameplay, it was FAST !! It was all about inventing tactics to defend your flag, while inventing new tactics to attack your opponents flag every match. The speed was amazing ... watch these vids to even slightly understand.

Tribes : Legacy (part 3 Teamwork)

We even had the Tribes World Championships ... USA West coast beat Australia in the final only because they refused to play on our servers. Cheats :p

Ahh good times ... go the Eternally Lost !!

Hmm.. I was about 12 when Tribes was released and I never played it but I heard a lot of good things about it. Great multiplayer experiences that come to mind for me:

Mario Kart 64
Warcraft 3
Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction (more a single player game, but I enjoyed it immensely on Bnet nonetheless)
Earth's Special Forces (Halflife Mod)

I used to play Tribes at work while on lunch until our overzealous IT manager found out.

It caused quite a rift between the drafting and engineering divisions. Many a strongly worded email was sent.

I'm still playing GTA4 online with a bunch of mates. We just barge into a game and annoy people by blowing everything up and doing epic skids in fast cars.

None of these games have a competitive and highly professional E-Sports scene.

You can make a very very comfortable living out of Starcraft Broodwar should you practise enough.

Its over 10 years old and is still played by millions.

While Goldeneye is one of my favourite games of all time, IMO it was the single player which made it stand out from the pack, rather than the multiplayer.

Thats not to say the multiplayer was bad, just that I reckon Mario Kart, Mario Party and Super Smash Bros all had better multiplayer on N64.
