Ask your fumbler mates that’s all they call it
Most don’t even know union exists

The nrl tv deal is pretty much worth the same as all the union tv deals around the world combined

The nrl is the worlds leading rugby competition by a long way

And it’s growing at a rapid pace whilst union is stagnating
Stay away from drugs kiddies

It’s not rocket science

There are two codes of rugby that evolved from a common game

One is rugby league
The other is rugby union

Hope this helps some on here

(What does the “r” in nrl stand for ?)

I have heaps outside NSW/Qld. My wife’s from Perth and her family say it all the time. You’ll hear it a lot in Melbourne too.
My conversations for the last 45 years (unless Im in Sydney and not at the University or in some parts of North of England) usually go:

Other: What football (soccer) team do you support
Me: I dont like football (soccer) so much and follow rugby
Other: Oh I sometimes watch the test matches and like Jonny Wilkinson, Jonah Lomu etc (insert famous union player of the time)
Me: I follow League not Union
Other: Oh, whats the difference?

I've had that conversation more times than I've had hot dinners!

I think we are at cross purposes here. In Melbourne if they don’t know the difference or care it’s ‘rugby’. They’ll watch either version and call it rugby. I’ve lived in an afl state for 65 years. It’s used generically by people from a that perspective. And it’s usually used in a derogatory sense tbh.

And didn't the NRL accidentally involve union last year, so it might not be rocket science but it seems like it's still confusing for even the governing body of our competition

Heck In many places around the world when people say rugby they mean rugby league (including hull)
There are probably only 10 countries in the world that have heard of rugby league and most, if not all, would also know of rugby union and when they say "rugby" they mean union. You can count the number that say "rugby" and mean "league" on less than 5 fingers.

And before you call me a non-league lover or an AFL troll, I have been following league for over 50 years. I am just a realist. League is a niche sport played in a few countries with only 2 meaningful competitions in Aust and England.

Is it? Someone tunes in to watch a Vegas game, thinks that was pretty good. Following week looks for 'rugby' in the tv guide and tunes in to watch some numpty union game and thinks geez that is pretty sht after all. Viewer lost.
Only a fool would think two different sports being called the same thing is a good idea!
Do they search for 'Rugby' though? America is pretty unique in the sense that most/all of their sports are referred to only by their main league names. They don't say they're going to go see American Football tomorrow or the Basketball. They say they're going to see NFL and NBA, even CFB - MLS, NHL - point is, they are in the habit of knowing sports by 3 letters only.

If we market as Rugby in the first few years to draw the existing Rugby fanbase in, then in years 3, 4 and 5 focus solely on marketing it as the 'NRL' and build that as the brand.

As long as they have all NRL related search terms on lock and key with SEO, so when someone searches 'play NRL' in the USA, an NRL based website comes up first, I don't see a problem with it.

Yeh the market for rugby league that is the nrl is 45 million people

What public awareness are you talking about ? Union is a sport most of the world knows nothing about and in most countries it’s played in is a minor sport

One is Union the other is league

They both are rugby codes

That niche in nsw and qld alone adds up to a lot more than the nieches union has in England France and tiny nations like nz or the British isles ex England

And with a png you will have to update that dated stereotype you mentioned

Watch out people, NRL is coming to PNG and is going to dominant the global sporting landscape and change dated stereotypes. Going to PNG actually reinforces that the vast majority of countries don't give a f#$k about NRL. If they did they would play it. Even in Australia, half the country watches/plays that other nasty sport called AFL.

Yes, NZ as you say is a tiny nation, so NRL if it ever takes over union will mean bugger all since union is a niche sport in that small country by your theory.

well it'll be even more confusing if they watch wigan and warrington and search for superleague and get a womens soccer comp lol
Sure as long as they search for NRL and not anything to do with rugby and league :)

American Union comps not confusing at all!

When you mentioned the stereotypes of where rugby league is popular it’s pretty funny you forgot Auckland and Melb

You would think after having nrl teams for 30 years they would be counted by now lol

Really, you must hang out with very different Americans. The ones I spoken to say football, basketball, baseball and hockey if they refer to the sport. More often they'd say the team like going to the Lakers, cubs, pats, Rangers etc . It's only really the talking heads that say acronym for dramatic effect.

Occasionally you do get NFL if you are getting to a college v pro level of granularity.

Admittedly I haven't had an American say "American" football. But it's pretty strongly implied.

But on do they search "rugby"? Yes.

When I was in Miami for the game last year US clients and colleagues were calling it rugby and I had to explain the difference, including to one guy who did an exchange year in sydney.
