Too easy to get around. Let's say this happened back in the days of Allan Langer, he retired from all football in 1999, he gets his payout and then further down the track he decided to come out of retirement and play in England. What would be to stop players announcing their retirement, getting their payout and then in the offseason signing up with an English club for the next year?

I still think Rep footy should be used as the carrot to prevent defection to SuperLeague. If you decide to go over there you should be automatically disqualified from playing Origin or for Australia while you are gone, and for 5 years if you come back to the NRL. That would mean that players in the twighlight of their careers would be ok to go over (which is fine by me), but those up and comers and current rep stars have huge discouragement to go.

Maybe some other discouragements/encouragements could be used as well, but rep footy is surely our biggest card to hold over players.
