The Myth of Millward

It is obvious to anyone that has watched footy for a while that there are massive issues in our roster

1. Speed on the flanks ... All our 3/4 seem a good deal slower than our opposition. Capewell showed this big time
2. Utility ... No player really capable of the 3/4/11/12 role. Last bloke we had was Thommo that could do this ... Most teams have a bloke who can do this role. Host tried hard but so slow like the rest of our team. These players are littered all around the NRL ie Staggs/Nikora/Capewell/Matterson - there are plenty of them but none with us.
3. Lock ... A small excuse here but one that hasnt been addressed.

There are massive holes in our roster. I am pretty sure that no-one with actual aspirations actually wants to play under Mary which is bad for us - but this year the failings of Millward are obvious in our squad.

Too much time spent by posters defending another Illawarra old boy out of his depth and killing the club.

Robson showed yesterday that he very well could be our replacement for JDB while at the same time switching with McInnes for certain plays or rest periods during a game.

McInnes is a workhorse in defence and a solid hooker and I believe would benefit greatly working with Robson in rotation between lock and hooker.

Maybe just my view but mccinnes just doesn’t pick the right pass or count numbers right I feel he would be an amazing lock and especially with Robson at hooker could well be a much better option

Those are suggestions that Mary will resist by not selecting Roson. Who cares what's good for SGI.

Maybe Millward should try and earn his paypacket by offering McInnes to NQ instead of Robson.

Yeah sure, so a way for Millward to gain credibility is to offer one of the top 4 hookers in the competition and current captain who bleeds for our club to another club that he doesn't want to go to, just to keep an exciting yet unproven kid who wants to leave?

Blokes like Aitken/our wingers/even moving towards Host and Graham now are the shit that is around him.

Graham is summed up with his effort on Uale - tried to pull of the motivational big hit, was sat on his bum. A bloke that time has caught up with. Definately worth keeping around the club though.

I’m interested to know if it was him or Mary who deemed that the likes of Herbert and Garrick (and to a lesser extent IMO, Sele) were not worthy of a future here, while securing the likes of Latimore and Allgood.

For mine, his talent identification is severely lacking.

This is the $6m question and for me this rests with the latter.
Selection of teams each week rests solely on the coaching staff and to Head as the transition coach.
Why would the likes of Herbert, Sele and even Garrick stay to play reserve grade when McGregor opts for Aitken and Nighty (last year) or a newbie from outside the club over them?
As someone (may even been you) stated we have a lot of our cap spread over a few players, so even if Millward was to attempt to re-sign why stay when someone else can offer (a) more $$, and (b) a start in first grade.
I have read that the coaching staff meet to discuss which player/s they wish to negotiate with, then its up to Millward to get the one they want, hence the Maranta signing.
We saw the future on Sunday, with the likes of Robson, it will be a shame that future is going to be with someone else (supposedly).

You argue the case against Millward much more lucidly than Possum. Nevertheless I would like to offer a counter arguement that the player purchases are fine, and the coaching is to blame.

As evidence I remember when Dugan first joined the club. His first game he played an absolute blinder, a match winning performance. Second game not as good but he was still the best of the Dragons. Third game he was as bad as everyone else. Also ask yourself how many players have improved under Mary? I can't think of any.

My point is that it may be wrong to blame Millward, and that Mary and his team have managed to de-skill them.
