It was a good start

So far it's near the same quality as Band of Brothers, though some of the acting of the smaller characters was a little off.

Are there any australians in this show??

If you were to watch most world war 2 movies you'd swear the war only started on D Day and it was just the yanks fighting the krauts and the japs on their own.

In a conflict based in the pacific though you'd have to think they'll include some australian troops in there somewhere.

I thought you were joking about Bill Hunter till I saw him in the credits. If you even mention australia in a TV Show or movie it seems Bill Hunter makes an appearance.

It's a standard contract in his clause.

Bud Tingwell had the same thing.

After the second episode I think so far it is lacking the character development that Band of Brothers had.

They seem to be trying to cram too much into each episode and they are leaving the characters behind.

It's still good though.

They must have seen him in Gallipoli & thought he was right for the part

Anyone still watching this?

I watched Episode 9 last night. Quite possibly the most horrific war scenes I have ever seen on a TV/movie screen.

I'm still watching.

After 9 episodes, I think it lacks cohesion. They should have spent more time polishing the writing. It just seems like a series of unrelated scenes.

True. I think it's a very different take on war compared to BoB. Although both theatres were horrific, I think you can say that the Pacific war was more brutal. Especially towards the end when the Japanese refused to surrender. Episode 9 is easily one of most horrific hours television I have ever seen.

It's hard to really make it cohesive because it is about 3 soldiers in 3 different companies rather than a group of soldiers in one platoon. In saying that, the interplay between Sledgehammer and SNAFU has been brilliant. Snafu is one creepy dude.

I also didn't know that Sledge, Sgt John Basilone and Pvt Leckie are/were actually real people. Leckie and Sledge, who both died in 2001, have both written separate books on the Pacific Theatre.

Yeah, that's its biggest problem. Band of Brothers was based on 1 book, so it all came together well.

I think it may have been better to split it into 3 parts and tell each guys story separately.

Still, I'll watch the last episode as soon as it comes out and I'll re-watch them all later.

The Pacific has been a major let down in my opinion. Its not where near the level that Band of Brothers was and Id think Generation Kill was a better war based mini series.

Nothing will ever compare to Band of Brothers. Unbeatable. Generation Kill was very good, but even it pales in significance to BoB.

I thought last weeks Pacific ep was very good, and am hoping it backs up again tonight. It's better than Underbelly anyway.

I think it really shows the differences in the two theatres of war.

For want of a better description the European campaign had a much better story arc. It was the "great evil" of our time they were fighting against, the war consumed the nations of the first world entirely and the occupation was of places of great signifigance to many and almost the entireity of Western Europe was occupied before the D Day invasions.

The Pacific war was never about great battles in places that meant something more than a strategic foothold. It was a grinding, brutal war which leaves little but the brutality as a lasting effect. Okinawa etc are places that still have never truly recovered from what they bore witness to.

Comparing the two series is unfair in that regard.

Personally a tale of the Eastern Front would have intrigued me more but I am keen to see the completed arc of this story of the Pacific theatre
