CHRIS Anderson has been sounded out by South Sydney powerbroker Alan Jones about becoming a coaching director at the Rabbitohs.
There is no suggestion coach Paul Langmack will be sacked, but Jones last night endorsed Anderson with confirmation from both parties that discussions had taken place.
The Daily Telegraph understands Anderson could come to Souths as a coaching director -- a similar position to the one Phil Gould holds at the Sydney Roosters.
It is unclear who approached who and while Jones has no official capacity at Souths, he remains an influential figure.
Langmack has the support of management and Jones has praised the Souths coach who is working with a player list badly affected by injuries.
But the high-profile radio announcer said the Rabbitohs would be "mugs" not to consider the services of Anderson.
"Paul Langmack is a doing a very good job. Everywhere he turns he has players with broken arms and broken legs," said Jones."In my opinion you would be a mug to have access to Chris Anderson and not use him. Chris is a premiership-winning coach and Test players I have spoken to say he is no-nonsense. This bloke would be a tremendous asset."
No deal has been struck between Souths and Anderson but there is speculation something could eventuate within the next few weeks.
"I like the South Sydney brand but I'd have to talk about a few things," Anderson said last night.
"I have spoken to Alan Jones and would be interested in having a talk if there was a position available."
Jones said Anderson would attract players to Souths.
"Players would want to come and be coached by him and he could help coach the coaches," Jones said.
"From what I hear he isn't interested in pleasant afternoon tea conversation but he has won premierships and let's not forget what he did on the Kangaroo tour."
Langmack said he would welcome Anderson assisting the coaching staff.
"I've played under him and played with him -- Chris has won premierships and has plenty of experience," Langmack said.
South Sydney chairman Nicholas Pappas speaking after a board meeting last night said no formal discussions had been held with Anderson. Told about Jones' comments, Pappas said: "Alan is a loyal follower who has made a significant contribution to this club. He's entitled to express his opinion, but we haven"t taken the matter forward."
